Police in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, have arrested a 43-year-old man after he stole a taxi and crashed it into two police vehicles parked outside a police station.

According to police, the incident occurred at 5 a.m. Sunday. Fuji TV reported that the suspect, Michikazu Kono, was riding in a taxi home when he fell asleep in the back seat.

The driver stopped in front of a police station to ask for help. When he got out, he left the engine running, he told police. While the driver was away, Kono woke up, grabbed the wheel and accelerated, driving into two patrol cars.

Police said that Kono, who was intoxicated, told them he didn't remember anything.

I wonder why the taxi driver stopped and got out. Probably had to go to the toilet. When you gotta go, you gotta go.

A big chunk of the story missing here, I mean how many people have been riding home in a taxi when it didn't stop at a police station ?

Dumb cab driver for leaving his keys in the car too.

He was drunk and doesn't remember. That's ok! He is abolished and will get a strong warning.

this story is so funny that I checked the Japanese news for more info. the guy was so drunk that he got into the taxi, mumbled something and then fell asleep. The driver didn't know what to do with him (no address and he couldn't wake him up), so he went to the police station, and while he was talking with a policeman what to do, the guy suddenly woke up, jumped into the driver seat and drove directly into two patrol cars. genius

Yeah, would have been real funny if he plowed into a group of kids. Real funny story indeed!

The title itself is so funny!

What a stupid individual!

Famous defense, " I'm sorry I drink too much and couldn't remember anything!"

Famous defense, " I'm sorry I drink too much and couldn't remember anything!"

It's been an international defense for over 4 decades:

"I don't know, I was really drunk at the time."

Pink Floyd: "Dark Side of the Moon": "Money"

Now that's pretty drunk. Have to wonder how he walked to the car.....

told them he didn’t remember anything

Before I even read this story, I KNEW this was going to be the excuse.

Do these guys get into a room and agree that this is going to be the excuse for every crime committed in Japan, or is everyone's brains wired to a some kind of common collective like a Borg from Star Trek

Is that a 'fail' or a 'priceless' moment?

At first I thought JT just stole the headline from The Onion.

Sounds like something out of a comedy movie. The Hangover 4.

I see so many people get out of their idling cars, to go into conbinis, etc. In some countries, that would effectively be saying goodbye to your car, but not in Japan. What happened to 安全第一 and all that jazz?

The driver didn't know what to do with him (no address and he couldn't wake him up), so he went to the police station

Glad he didn't have an address and it wasn't just a case of him not knowing how to get there.

When my wife's water broke, we took a taxi to her hospital in Osaka, only for the driver to go to the old address (the hospital had moved a couple blocks). Apparently he was using a paper map that was a decade old.
