a culture where if one commits a crime, shame is brought to the entire family.

This isn't really a Japanese or even Asia specific thing. People in my country (a predominantly white country) wouldn't want people to know if a family member got arrested for something either. And in Japan, the family just won't say anything to other people about the arrest.

Strict laws don't ban bottles which you can buy at any store. Japan is generally a safe country, but no major city the world is 100% safe. If a guy is ready to beat another person up with a bottle and tires to steal the guys bag, I highly doubt he cares about brining shame on his family name.

"It is shocking that such violent crime ever occurs in East Asia including Japan. " Singapore is safest place in SE Asia.

I guess the victim was jarred for a second by hitting from behind. But he tried to fight back until the attacker fled empty-handed. Meanwhile it was good for him to have got away with minor injuries.

Good point, I guess the mugger was quite in need of money so he criminally and selfishly thought a quick mug would do the trick "at around 11:50 p.m. Tuesday"

Well, I say this: At least the robber had the balls to attack an adult male, instead of going after children and women.
