Once someone turns 18, he or she is an adult and needs to start his own life away from the mother.....he came from the mother and just stuck around the place he came from yet the placenta had been cut ages ago. See whah happens now.

Too much babying is a problem in Japan.

How come these murder suicides have very good murderers that are so bad at killing themselves later? Biting his own tongue? That is so lame.

I'm 20 a university student and I'm sometimes living with my mother. I'm 8 months living alone, 2 months in Japan and something like 1 month with my mother and no I won't kill her or anybody else. Just because he was living with his mother doesn't mean if you live with your mother after you turn 18 that you will kill someone... come on!

Julius: adulthood starts at 20 in Japan, for starters, and second while many people in the US, Canada, and other nations tend to live away from home for school or work, or what have you, from around 18 (or after highschool) it's not always practical in Japan, where rent is extremely high and the schools not always as far away geographically. There are those who go and live in dorms for university and/or later apartments, but the norm is to live at home, at least at first, and commute. There's nothing wrong with that, nor is there anything particularly wrong with staying at home after graduation if the young adult gets a job and can commute. To an extent, of course. It's just different culture, and that's not the reason for the murder. Chances are in this case the kid was still living at home due to other problems -- same ones that led to him killing his mother.

I'm just saying you can't blame this or the other spate of murders by young people recently on living at home around 18 or soon after.

Living at home after 18 denies anyone from learning the responsibilities of striking it out on one's own. Logically it would be smart to start off with a room-mate or 3 to learn how to pay (and reduce the amount of rent) one pays, pay your utilities, buy food and so on. I can understand someone staying home while they're in college or returning to their parents home due to dire financial straights (what parent doesn't want to protect their child when they can?), but once they get a reasonable job, they have to learn to leave the security of the home and learn how to deal with the rest of the world. Parent's don't live forever, and accidents can happen in this world that can take them away.

You hit the nail. Here in Canada I'm living 7 hours away from my hometown because of university. In Japan it's easier to live near one. As you said who will rent an appartment in Tokyo when he/she can lives with his/her parents!

It was easy to say he did that because he was still living with his mother it's like when they always link the fact that the criminal had no job and that it was just a matter of time before it happens... I almost feel like a dangerous criminal now... I'm 20, not working and living with my mother 1 month on 12.

Anyway the article doesn't give us much info. Maybe they both wanted to die so it was not a ''real'' murder.

Good point smithinjapan. Its a bad situation for these young adults to remain at home. Especially during their higher ed years. I was shocked to learn that most college students here dont even drive. Own a car. Let alone experience their new adulthood, privacy, and freedom as their western counterparts do. Heck, i would go stir-crazy if I had to still live @home at that age!!

Am I the only one bothered by the weird grammar in the headline? "Man kills mother" OK. "Mother killed by son" OK. But "son kills mother" is odd (and redundant).

For those complaining about the fact a young man lives with his mother, please read the books of Takeo Doi. Learn the country that hosts you. Japan is not USA, and for many people, family is the 1st home ( ex : 家 and its meaning ). There is no need for many young japanese to go far from family ( except for jobs, study or a need of free life ), because in this country, if you are not depending of someone, it means you are nobody.

It's typical in Japan to live with parents until marriage. It's cheaper that way, anyway if a college student with no steady income rents an apartment they need a guarantor--a parent--so still not independent.

Cars are hardly necessary in urban Japan because public transportation is so good.

The whole system is set up so that children do not reach full independence from parents until they get a full-time job (men) and/or get married (women).

It's not America here and the Japanese way works for a lot of people, a small number of which are disturbed, evil folks, where they live probably won't change them.

Not as clear and concise as "man kills mother." When I read the headline, aside from the redundancy, I wondered whether it was a schoolboy or a grown man. That could have been made clear in the headline.

Very sad.

For those complaining about the fact a young man lives with his mother, please read the books of Takeo Doi. Dr. Takei Doi takes people in circles,at times, almost an apologist for Japanese not so good behavior. Have you read his principles of "Amae" ?

@lucabrasi Quite true, but I think most people would assume that - whereas it would be a coin-flip to assume the age of the killer. I thought it was a schoolboy when I read it.

While we are at it, I notice the lack of a comma in the headline, which suggests that he killed his mother only after he called the police. But I automatically assumed otherwise, as I'm sure most readers did. Either way, I am sure you'll agree that discussing grammar is a far better way to pass time than discussing random murder cases:)

In America I lived with my parents until I turned 23 and then moved to japan. I think its a normal thing to live with your family. I was lucky I lived in a family that didnt push me out at the age of 18. I loved living with my parents but we all shared responsibilities and I payed rent while going to school full time and working full time. In Japan families live together in the same household from grandparents to grandchildren. Its pretty normal in a lot of countries. He killed his mother and yeah they were living together but scroll down in the crime section and see how many people kill their relatives. It happens all over the world but Japan doesnt seem to censor things like in America.
