Police on Tuesday said they have arrested two temp agency employees on suspicion of pouring kerosene over the head of a former employee and setting him on fire in Mie Prefecture.
According to police, the two men—Kazuyuki Osada, 44, the agency manager, and 34-year-old Natsumi Hanai, a former employee, are accused of taking a 35-year-old former employee into the car park of the Kameyama apartment block from which Osada ran the company, on March 25 of this year, TBS reported. They then allegedly poured kerosene over his head and set him on fire.
Police say the victim sustained extensive injuries in the attack and it is expected to take him three months to recover. His assailants were arrested on charges of attempted murder.
During police questioning, both men have so far denied the charges, although each reportedly gave conflicting reports of events, TBS said. Osada was quoted by police as saying: “I poured kerosene over him, but I didn’t set him alight.” On the other hand, Hanai was quoted as saying: “Osada poured kerosene over him and set him alight. I just brought the kerosene.”

BTW, kerosene does not burn when set to an open flame, it needs pressure and the resultant vapors can burn. Gasoline will alight instantly but kerosene won't.
This story doesn't add up.

Wrong. Kerosene / paraffin does not need "pressure" to burn, look at all the stoves and lamps which just have a wick in the liquid, capillary action soaks the wick and it is lit with a flame from a match or lighter. Try it yourself (in a safe place); soak a piece of cloth in kerosene and hold a match to it and see it burn.

Harry, you're right, regarding cloth and kerosene. The vapors from the kerosene will burn slowly, but not in a highly flammable manner like gasoline.

I had some old kerosene I did not want to burn in heaters in the house. So I poured a little at a time in a wheel barrow and burned it. Believe me, it burns readily, easily, and hotly, although not in an instant big WHOOSH. Oh, the flames will get big all right, but the flame sort of creeps at first and I was amazed at how it just burns, and burns and burns, despite the massive flames. That day was when I truly appreciated just how much energy is stored in kerosene.
Maybe not like gasoline, but its still highly flammable.

That poor man. What a horrific thing to have done to someone. I hope these guys get life and spend the rest of their time sitting in seiza and not being allowed to do a damn thing. Even then, it is far less a punishment considering what the victim must be going through with regards to pain and suffering.

@NeverSubmit, Kerosesn/Paraffin is gas at room temperature and thus turns into a gas when exposed to the open, these fumes easily catch fire. It doesnt burn half as viciously as petrol for example, but it still burns and wont stop burning easily, once alight that poor man would have little chance at getting it out before it burnt itself out.

Actually both only burn in vapor form, and kerosene has higher energy per kg, so in effect it would be much more dangerous since it would release more heat. There's a reason jet fuel is kerosene based. It's not the fire that causes burns, it's the heat. And lets face it, kerosene would produce more localized heat than gasoline would. And that's before including biological toxicity of kerosene.

NOOOooooo. Police made the arrest on Tuesday. Police were ALSO the ones at the same time who said it will take three (more) months to recover. That's a total of six months.
What part of "I brought the kerosene", "I poured the kerosene on him", and "Osada poured kerosene over him and set him alight" means they have denied the charges? Seems like an admission of guilt to me from both perps.
