Two years & still waiting for the Japanese release... With the archaic music industry here I might as well give up waiting...

Try Jango. Free and it works in Japan. Maybe not as good as Spotify, but there is plently of music available.

Gave up on them waiting to start the service in Japan. Been using hola to use the service for the last few months whilst in Japan.

Jango, like it's already been mentioned, works on Android and is OK. There are also YouTube music stemming apps out there. Spotify and other services will work with VPN services or DNS services, like "Unblockus".
Anyway, this whole article's connection to Japan is pure fluff; Japan is infamous for being eons behind the developed world when it comes to online services, such as game and multimedia streaming services. It's a joke.
