Whoever wrote this article?n Obviously,not well versed in the subject matter nor the lore.. Suntory has been a household name abroad ever since Jim Murray publicised it in 'Lost in Translation'

“What we want to sell is premium beer, so the environment is not yet ready for us.” Earlier this month, Suntory said it had agreed to scrap a loss-making brewery joint venture with Tsingtao Brewery Co Ltd, highlighting the difficulties Japanese brewers face in the global beer market.

There are two problems here. 1) Japanese beer companies are a shining example of Japan Inc. being out of touch with the outside world. They have no competition here - just go to any supermarket or combini & it's as clear as day. The craft beer market, especially those from boutique micro-breweries, is exploding - but not here. Large, mass-brewers can't do craft beer.

2) The marketing strategies (same old cooke-cutter ads) Japanese beer companies use here don't work abroad. Foreign beer advertising is often witty, funny & even on the side of cheeky. They know their audience. Japan on the other hand...
