A man was seriously injured after being hit by a woman who apparently jumped from a building in Tokyo's Shinjuku on Monday morning.

According to police, the 30-year-old woman jumped from the 9th floor of her office building into a parking lot at 10:30 a.m. TV Asahi reported that a 45-year-old company employee was conversing with a colleague in front of a vending machine when the woman landed on him.

Police said the man suffered a broken neck, while the woman broke her back in the fall.

Lost for words. I hope the man can be helped. As for the woman...

OMG. That's horrible and very traumatic for those who witnessed this, especially the colleague who standing by so close.

Please do not try it again. It should be counted as three strikes and you are out! Seek some help and remember the sun always welcome you tomorrow. Your soul needs your body to grow, so please give it many more chances. Cheers.

What an idiot... whats wrong with coal?

What a bizzare incident. In America, this would result in a massive lawsuit. That's not necessarily a good thing, but I just wonder what kind of compensation, if any, this poor man is going to get.

And the man also broke her fall.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Do you think she was aiming for him?

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

Not the first time reading such news. Government should create manner posters like those of Tokyo Metro Subway.

Please do it at home.

Look before you leap?

Wow, guy is taking a break, chatting about office politics and then POW, broken neck. You just never know...

5 ( +6 / -1 )

suicide gone wrong apparently she is still alive. she probably wished she's dead

what a B!7(#

Jees, poor guy..

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Sounds like hes in worse shape than her. Throw her in the slammer when she gets out of the hospital. Hopefully hell be alright. Now he`ll miss work for awhile and most likely family time if he had a wife and kids.

Do you think she was aiming for him?

nah, she on suicide mission, most probably her eyes are closed >_<

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I wonder what drove her to do that? I hope she and her unfortunate 'victim' can recover, although they may both end up never being able to walk again.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Sounds like she was aiming for him - or just a guy in general. Probably jilted by an ex and decided to take it out on any hapless dude.

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

We don't actually know if she was a jumper. Maybe it was foul play. Were her shoes on or off?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Stupid moron. Sue the c rap out of her

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Oh, righto, enough of the 'she's an idiot' rubbish.

I would bet by bottom dollar that the last thing she was trying to do was hurt someone else. I bet she is horrified. It was an accident. And if no-one here has ever had an accident, then go ahead, throw your stones.

If you have however, then stop being stupid.

Try a little compassion instead.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

This is sad. And so are the comments degrading the poor woman.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

However you look at it, he saved her life. In some cultures, that is a lifetime debt. But it seems she wanted to die. She may hate him beyond measure if she is conscious and feeling the pain of that broken back.

I was thinking it would be a fascinating story if they started dating after recuperating and eventually got married. When people ask how they met, they could say they "bumped into each other" in Shinjuku!

I wish I could give 100 thumbs up to PersonaNonGrata for that Nov 12, 7:37pm post.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Another sign of the desperation the people are feeling with Abe's Three Arrow policies?

That would be a nice way for this to end, wouldn't it.

Serrano and others, I agree wholeheartedly - I wish people would stop insulting people who feel they have no option other than to take their lives. I bit of human empathy or sympathy wouldn't go amiss.

Exactly the same thing happened in Ikebukuro 3 or 4 years ago. Both the male victim and the female jumper died.

Why did I get so much negativity on my post about her aiming for him? Do you think she couldn't see people below her when she jumped? If she was crazed enough to jump it's not a much further stretch to think she was jumping because of a man and decided to take one out with her.

??? Why is my post at 08:50PM JST down-voted? Bizarre.

I bit of human empathy or sympathy wouldn't go amis Suicide is sad and tragic. But having no regard for the safety of others while committing suicide is immoral.

taiko666, you beat me to it! Exactly what I was about to post. And I'd include mental health of others in that. I can never understand how train jumpers can fail to think about the poor driver who will be haunted for the rest of his or her life by their suicide. There are many ways to do kill yourself without causing danger or trauma to random strangers.

Alternative movie ending: they meet in the hospital, fall in love, all is forgiven, live happily ever after.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Assisted suicide services would prevent this.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

the stress must have got to her.

Suicide is not deserving of sympathy or empathy. It is deserving of scorn and endless ridicule. It is time Japan stop tolerating this kind of selfish act. This is not Edojidai they are not samurai and the are not committing sepuku. But if you want to kill yourself a knife in your stomach will not injure anyone else physically. Suicide is a losers way out. And its time the Japanese start emphasizing it. A permanent solution to a temporary problem. So I hope this woman suffers and the poor man recovers 100%.

A public display is a last cry for help... I would hardly call it a loser's way out. Would you have the balls to jump off a bridge? Step into the path of a train? Jump out of a window? People who commit suicide are not cowards - they are people who can simply see no way out of a situation.

No-one is saying it should be applauded or treated as honourable, ironmonkey - all we are saying is that rather than insulting them, ask why they did it? What could drive a person to take their own life? THAT is what needs to be addressed, and then you can start on the journey to preventing people taking their own lives. Society needs to ask these questions, not heap scorn on those who do it.

We aren't all emotionally strong enough to cope with what happens in our lives. The problem is that some of these suicides are caused through bullying at school in the workplace, pushing the emotionally fragile into this final act of release. A hurtful comment, physical bullying... even a cold callous lover dumping someone can push them literally over the edge.

They DO need sympathy AND empathy. Until that's addressed people will be afraid to admit to feeling suicidal, fearing they'll be called losers or worse.

@Thunderbird2 I'm sorry but that is true in many countries but not Japan. It is a systemic problem in Japanese culture. The act of suicide is not deemed dishonorable or a sin as in many other cultures, quite the contrary it has a history of being applauded. Could I jump from a window no because I love my life no matter how hard life gets. And I would never put my family through finding my brains splattered all over the street or the front of a train. I understand bullied people who want to commit violence in their bullies ( I don't condone it but understand it) but committing violence on myself because of bullies is just as foriegn an idea to me as kissing may be to a space alien. Suicide is a problem in Japan and needs to have a very negative stigma attached to it so middle schoolers stop killing themselves because they didn't make it into the high school they wanted. Mental illness in general in Japan needs addressed seriously because of Japanese societal attitude towards mental health related issues this may contribute to why people kill themselves rather than seeking help.

Amazing that they both survived. 9 floors is way up there. I hope they both recover and she gets some mental attention.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I guess she wants her life "back" now!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I would think that by the time a person decides to jump off a roof or in front of a train that their mental faculties are so screwed up that they aren't thinking about the consequences for the people around (or below) them. I hope the poor guy recovers but a broken neck is pretty tough to come back from.

Yeah, mental health and dealing with stress in Japan needs to come into the modern age. There are a lot of cultural forces that make suicide acceptable. Those need to be pushed aside. The government should be pushing mental health as much (or more) than they push "cool biz" and such.

Talk about being at the wrong place at the wrong time, hope the guy will be okay.

Suicide is not deserving of sympathy or empathy. It is deserving of scorn and endless ridicule. Suicide is a losers way out.

I want you to remember this when things go pair shaped in your life, or when you start suffering from depression or anxiety, or you develop some debilitating illness, or you get a terminal diagnosis.

Lets see if you are still so callous and flippant then.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Broke her back? So, does that mean she survived?
