Facebook was a life saver last year with everyone checking in and updating things. Dislike it for whatever reasons but it provides a useful service for situations like last year. I know it helped reduce my stress, gave me updates faster than the news could and really showed me that the world does care about Japan and the people who were affected by this all.
Has also helped out TEPCO and the government with all their lies.

Facebook was great after the earthquake last year- because normal phone and SMSing wasn't possible my husband and I were still able to get in touch with each other easily through our phones, he was able to arrange to borrow a bike from friends to travel the second half of the 32km home from work and friends who lived more centrally offered places to stay to people who lived further out.
Knock it and Mark Zuckerburg all you like, it was invaluable to us last year.

I agree with Apsara and others, knock Facebook and other social networking sites all you want, but at the end of the day, it's just another communication tool that can prove to be very valuable, even lifesaving IF the user is responsible and uses it in moderation. That's the key, folks. And, as for the timing of Zuckerberg's trip to Japan, it's cherry blossom time - who wouldn't want to be in Japan!!

Not only that but it was invaluable in setting up groups/npos etc who delivered aid, organised clean up crews etc and continue to do so. Many wouldn't have been able to do anywhere near what they have done (or anything at all?) without the information/connections made on Facebook. It obviously wasn't set up for that but it was an essential tool last year.

I'm not a huge fan or user of FB but on the day of the quake I remember everyone being unable to get through to loved ones on their standard mobile phones while the few people around me with SmartPhones were able to contact relatives overseas via FB or other means almost immediately to let them know they were okay. And I thought 'damn. Wish I had thought of that!'
That's the first time that I felt that I might actually NEED FB for something, or at least a SmartPhone.....

If you were able to get your computer on line, why would you look at face book for info when you could have checked live with others around the world and in Japan?
And if like me you were not able to get your computer on line? Getting through to one person who got through to another person who was able to post on FB that I and the rest of the family were safe, put a lot of people's minds at ease much faster and with greater efficiency than if we were all waiting to get all our computers on line to Skype each other. Skype is good, I like Skype, - but FB was a godsend last March.

I was freaking out from this miracle, so I didn't even explain who I was when I first talked to her. She was like "uh? Who is this?!?!?" I must sounds like a real crazy high tension japanese girl!! And I finally claimed down and told her who I was. She said that she couldn't have an access to internet after tsunami came so she couldn't contact with her family. She sounds ok:)) I AM SO HAPPY for Jessica's mom and rest of her family!!! Great news!"
This group was started by Yuko and her friend Akane. This story became part of a TexX presentation in Singapore even! It's just a testimony to the power of Social Networks during times of disasters and seeming hopelessness.

A FB group was formed by those staying in Japan and they spent days reading the Japanese language himanjyou (shelter) rosters posted in Google images, combing them for foreign names in katakana. They put the names back into their original languages and posted them so that people from foreign countries could search for their families. Originally it started as a way to search for one of the English teachers who was missing, but before long the names of all foreigners in all shelters were put up. Facebook and Google Images made a huge difference in this disaster, gave us an ability to see and disseminate info that we did not have in '95 or even after the later Niigata quake.

Sure. Lets have 10 million people streaming video or even just audio in order to simply let all their friends know they're OK. Oh, wait. Either I have to get all 50 of my friends on Skype at the same time, or send the EXACT SAME MESSAGE up to 50 times when they finally DO get on Skype. Well that's a minor problem! I can deal with that. ... Umm, the network seems unusually slow... crawling, actually. You don't suppose the 9,999,999 other people using Skype to let their friends know they're OK is impacting the network bandwidth, do you? NAWWW!!! That could NEVER happen! "Da InterWebz" has INFINITE capability! (rolls eyes) Talk about "wasting your time!"

A lot of us were stranded in the center of the city and did not arrive home for hours so of course we weren't able to get our computers online. And a single message on Facebook let a large number of very worried relatives and genuine friends know we were fine- what on earth is there to mock about that? My husband and actually mostly used Viber to communicate before we got home but Facebook played a big part as well.
