I'm much more worried about why the games haven't yet been sent to Madrid - or Istanbul - instead... Take care of Fukushima first and stop spending tax-payers money for a big ugly stadium that nobody wants.

Why is that? Everyone involved trying to get a little more from the gravy train?

it is too big and too expensive. would have been more interesting and keeping with japanese character to see if they could have somehow expand and modernize the existing stadium.

it will balloon much much higher if they stay with Zaha's design, she had very bad track record on delivery of actually functional buildings and most always require fixes and troubleshooting ( London olympics anyone ) ... Drop Zaha, take proper JP architect and drop Tadao Ando from the committee. The reason why Japanese architect was not chosen in the first place is because Ando-san cant let anyone be considered above him as the most prominent Japanese architect... its purely politics .

I mean this respectfully, but I don't believe remodeling or refurbishing is at all in line with Japanese character. As I understand it, Japanese (post bubble era) as a whole overwhelmingly prefer new stuff. Buildings are regularly gutted entirely or torn down just to build essentially the same building again. Rather than a repaint and some refurnishing they simply tear it all out and go from scratch. Other used things, like recycle shops, are by and large incredibly underused.

Get the other Mori involved. he is good at delivering iconic buildings on time and within budget.
