How hard is it to know what google does?
When you are online, google is tracking you. When you send or receive emails to/from a gmail account, google is reading those emails. When you use google applications, storage, or any android device, google is looking at all network traffic.
The reason?
to find ways to advertise stuff at you. to store this data - especially metadata - for use later because governments like google to keep this data for their use later.Nothing complex at all. I work in IT security and have network blocking setup for almost all google subnets, still, it is impossible to get away from them since almost every non-techincal person is using gmail. Most people just don't realize how much is known from their online behaviors. It is really scary.

theFu, totally agree. Even running a simple Firefox add-on like NoScript shows you that Google pretty much has its hands deep in almost every web page you visit.
But I don't think the article is so much about the fact that Google is tracking just about everything we do online. I think it's the "giving users no way to opt out" bit that is seeing them starting to run foul of regulators in Europe.
