If smaller corrupt entities prove to be more responsive to the needs of their local constituencies, then it is a step forward. The ruling elite in Manila serve only their own interests and it is no coincidence that the political elite and the economic elite are one and the same group. It is the disconnect between the interests of the elite and the reality of the common folk that is at the root of every insurgent movement in the Philippines. It is also a major reason why Duterte was elected.

You may see Duterte as a "sleazeball murderer" ( and there are plenty of people who would agree with you). But for millions of common Filipinos he is their "sleazeball murderer" and that is preferable to the elitist indifference that they get from the powers in Manila.

I have a good friend in Davao (Duterte country) who happens to be a British expat. I asked her why she decided to live in the Philippines and her response was " This place is paradise compared to back home." I'm paraphrasing her answer but that is pretty much the gist of it. I guess it depends on what lens you look through.

Trust me, Duterte is probably the least corrupt compared to the people in Manila. Anyone who've lived in the Philippines would know this. Indirectly, the guys in Manila probably have caused more blood spilled then Duterte's direct kill squads.

I hope for Pinoys' sake, they have not elected their own version of Pol Pot.
