Moore urges Japan to recover caring social security system

U.S. documentary filmmaker Michael Moore is urging people in Japan to get back a social security system based on the spirit of mutual trust, warning that the country appears less caring following the excessive reign of ''conservative'' governments.

''You started to go down the other road, so my humble plea is for you to come off that road with your new prime minister and go down the road that we used to admire,'' the Oscar-winning director said during a promotional event at the Tokyo Stock Exchange for his latest work ''Capitalism: A Love Story.''

Moore, 55, said he hopes the film will encourage people in Japan to have second thoughts about following ideas believed in the United States, such as only the strong will survive, and to revalue the safety net system that Japanese people built to help each other after World War II.

''Quit being like us. Be the Japan you created after 1945,'' Moore, who came to Japan for the first time, said. ''You believe that you're all Japanese and that you're on the same boat.''

In the 127-minute film, Moore accused a handful of leaders in the U.S. government and Wall Street of obtaining funds, including taxpayers' money, all to themselves thus leading to making themselves richer and most others poorer.

Moore also urged President Barack Obama not to expand the war in Afghanistan. He said that he had sent Obama a message from his father, a World War II veteran. "I passed on to him a personal request from my father and his Japanese friend: 'Mr Obama, you do not know war. We both know war and want it no more'," he told reporters.

Moore attended the press conference in a casual coat over a black sweat shirt and sweat pants, looking decidedly casual. "The airline lost my luggage," he said, adding that one of his first stops in Tokyo was a clothing store popular with sumo wrestlers. "Where are they going to find a store in Japan with clothes that fit me? I am partly in my pajamas and partly in sumo attire," he said.

''Capitalism: A Love Story'' will be released in Tokyo and Osaka on Saturday and other major cities in January.

Riiight.. Moore is just what Japan needs.

When I first visited Japan four decades ago, it was commonly said and believed by Japanese that over 90% of the nation could consider itself middle-class. That one would see great numbers of homeless people was unimaginable.

Moore seems to believe that Japan went wrong by following the U.S. I recall W. Edwards Deming, in his last years, cautioning Japan against adopting the American management model, which thought would lead both nations down the tubes.

It's very interesting stuff to analyze.

The only problem with Moore's statement is that the Japan of 1945 worked its workers into the ground for the return of "lifetime employment." Granted, it is much better than what we have now, whereby workers are worked into the ground and then fired, but it is not really the model that needs to be replaced. Yes, lifetime employment is good, but most of these jobs are toxic and Japanese need, above all, some directions, dreams, and some knowledge about starting their own businesses. The education system here doesn't quite allow for that, does it?

Good points, TheRat. The Japanese seem to adhere to the saying, "No Pain, No Gain," much to their detriment.

Michael Moore must be crushed that Obama is ignoring his unsolicited advice.

Lifetime employment, inexpensive health care for all, affordable education, the motto "a hundred million people equal". I agree with Moore that Japan was on the right track and should not have veered toward free market capitalism, especially with Koizumi's policies.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think you missed his point. The fact that Japanese saw themselves all in the same boat made them adopt policies that created a nation of middle class workers. While this was not an ideal situation, it was the right general sentiment. People, especially working people need to feel a sense of solidarity and mutual responsibility. This encourages workers to help protect each other's rights and to push politically for a system that reflects the needs and values of workers.

What Japan needs is a return to local responsibility, wide spread worker solidarity and a push to assure that the middle and poor are set as priorities and not only the tiny wealthy class.

bunch of nonsense! This moron doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. It was the Japanese PEOPLE that brought Japan out of the hole they were in in the 50's. Government had nothing to do with it. Government intervened in the 80's by lowering interest rates by 2% and it all went downhill. If they didn't do that they would have been no bubble or lost decade. It would have been steady growth, same as for decades before.

Now the government went into debt, twice the size of GDP, which is nothing less than a time bomb that will cause hyper inflation or default.. or both. So-called conservative government tried to spend their way ouf of recession. They failed in the 90's. why would they succeed now? Government should stop spending and let Japaonese people fix the country. They did it before, they can do it again.

As for Moore, he should get deported.

Japan has come up with remarkable research & technology, due in part, to a competitive market.

Michael Moore is a film maker. Buy tickets, complete his own personal Capitalism story. Learn by example.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Riight - now he's in Japan? I illegally downloaded his movies, and did read one of his books (tachiyomi style). I'm afraid that paying for anything he produces is against the very principles he promotes :).

Agree with the Obama comments - now that George "The Idiot" Bush is OOtOO (Out Of the Oval Office), whom can Moore bash at? Japan?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think some posters are mistaking the fact that under socialism and other market systems selling items for profit do not betray those systems.

Michael Moore making money from his movies isn't going against the principles he is promoting.

Capitalism/Socialism/Communism is a question of not only how revenue is generated but more importantly of HOW that the country distributes the wealth to its people.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why does the world have to be black and white for the right wing conservative crowd. Is it bleed over from the polarity of conservative religious good vs evil that drives this inability to see the many colors that define political spectrums?

You know people, you can earn a living, make money, own a home and still be an advocate of the poor. You can dress in dumpy fashion and still have something valuable to say. You can run a business and still be good for workers. All of this seems like common sense, though I find it is not very common at all for people to show signs of having it.

Michael Moore draws attention to issues we all share. Dirt poor or working you have heavy medical costs. Rich or poor you lost a lot of your tax dollar value last year bailing out companies. Like it or now we are from a gun mad and violent nation. None of this is news. Michael is just pointing out the problem from different perspectives, usually from pretty ordinary people. But then we don't like listening to the ordary do we?

See it is easy to say that someone poor is lazy. Or someone in trouble is a failure. Or that person isn't me or my family so I don't need to care for them. But that requires forgetting that a lot of the people in his movies are just like us. They work, they have families, they do their best and yet... life deals out some pretty hard breaks.

Don't you think it is time someone told those stories. I mean we get 24/7 coverage of the rich, glamourous and famous. We even have Cops and reality shows to show us the rabid criminal poor. But we don't want to see everyday reality like the family down the street going broke because Mom got cancer. Or the disfunctional kid next door who might just shoot your kids at school next week. Or the company that does not give a rats A@@ about you and cuts you off the first time their shareholders demand better dividends.

Reality is real, it hurts and it is scary. So we shoot the messenger that brings it to us. A lot easier than coming to terms with it, isn't it. And a lot easier that getting of your fat behind and doing something about it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

’’Quit being like us. Be the Japan you created after 1945,’’

I'm glad someone finally said it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

One more note. The poor and criminal elements in Cops and other shows are seen as entertainment. Well, if the world continues down the current economic path, a lot more of you may find yourselves faced with their same challenges. Crime or starvation. Violence of death. Those poor often have no real options for change. Like a lot more of you our there will face in years to come. Like it or not, reality again.

Now you can get on with shooting the messenger of bad news. Hope it makes you feel better at least.

What would this idiot know about Japan? Only what he read on the plane I would imagine.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Moore knows war! Moore is a case of misguided spoiled American with unrealistic dream of caring world socialist system. He needs to make a document film about how Islam spread from Mecca to Indonesia and beyond... under the power of sword and belief. How can he connect the dots of Muslim world and his socialist world concept. All his friends in Cuba, Venezuela, China, Russia, N. Korea... really enjoys their roaming freedom under their dear leaders, aren't they? Keep on Mooring, I mean dreaming and exploiting. I agree under dictatorship of socialist or communism; there are less obese peoples, because not enough food to eat.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Bgood41. Wow, what a cold war point of view. If you don't agree with some US policy then you are some kind of red from Cuba, China etc...

Funny how the right in the US who advocated their faith as much as their politics seem to miss the socialistic ideologies supported by their key biblical charachter Jesus Christ. All that talk of giving from what you have to help the other guy, wanting to see all people cared for must have been lost in the dark ages when power corrupted religion as a means to control the ignorant masses and to pacify them though divine fear.

It is not communism to want to see everyone have good health care. A healthy society is arguably nationalistic and should be a right wing value. Afterall a healthy society can work harder, protect the nation and raise our productivity while reducing our risks of widespread illness.

It is not socialism to want an education for our young people no matter what their ability to pay is. See if we have the best educated kids on the planet we have the competive edge and the capacity to grow our culture and economy. Not to mention the obvious reductions in crime you get from giving people opportunities to break the cycle of poverty. Again this is almost right wing in concept.

Finally it isn't red to expect the government to care as much for workers as it does for the wealthy corporations and their owners. After all our founding fathers broke away from an aristocratic system in favor of one that protected the ordinary working people. Seems this was lost somewhere too.

I wish more people would look at the bald faced reality of life for most Americans now and start to realized that the scary reds you like to point fingers at are actually patriots who want to see life better for you, your kids, your city, your state and your country. And they want to do it by making the normal family and working people of equal importance to the wealthy and corporate interests. Now why is that so hard for people to get their heads around? Has the corporate propaganda been so successful brainwashing you into mindless consumers that you can no longer see the areas in your life where a little better system would help? Wake up people.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

tkoind2 vs Bgood 41 : Good posts. Collective responsibility vs individual rights. Should be able to have both. Personally I think Japan has done quite well and is more caring than the US, except for the christian organizations in the US.

Nisegaijin makes some good points about big government not always being the solution. One principle we might remember is subsidiarity: subsidiarity is an organizing principle that matters ought to be handled by the smallest, lowest or least centralized competent authority.

A dignity of a human being such as freedom of expression and human right are far more precious than foods and economics. Any "Ism" or government should strive to provide the well being of both aspect, namely human value and economic well being. It is not about the motivation or intention, it is about how to deliver the prosperity to all. Empty words are meaningless. The world has a come along way from the dark age, yet many folks today are still honoring the dictatorship of the worlds. Each of us should try to show the seed of goodness, thus building a tree and forest of peace through love, respect and understanding. And it starts from observing human dignity, not the other war around. Kumbaya....?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Bgood. It isn't a question of ism or no-ism. It is a question of responsible government vs irresponisible governance.

All this fear about Big Brother when you already have big brother. But it isn't government. It is corporate. They tell you what you want to buy, keep you thinking you need this thing or that and define what is good and bad. Orwell was wrong when he thought it would be a totalitarian government that was big brother. It is the corporate world and their independence from real responsibility that makes them far more dangerous.

But on a positive note. You should not fear the responsible use of government structures to provide services and support where profits are better left out and the interests of people better protected. Health care, education and governance should be driven by the needs of the people and not by the whim of industry.

I value my independence and individuality more than I can express here. But I don't have to sacrifice that to achieve universal health care and better education for my community. On the contrary. Universal health care enables me to be healthy and for my community to be so to. While education, if anything, creates the individuals that we need to lead us forward on economic, intellectual and social fronts. With opportunity provided to all who care to pursue it. This empowers freedom and individuality.

There is no ism that properly describes what we live with today where companies define so much of our lives and our political systems are subjected by the needs of business more than our needs. But there are words that describe what should be, democracy, equality and opportunity. Michael Moore advocates these values as do I.

Why are so many of you afraid of giving others opportunities to live to their full potential? To empower and raise up the guy next to you will raise up and empower your community and by natural result raise you up as well. The individual is made greater and more independent when the whole value his or her humanity, rights and value to the world.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Moore is absolutely right about urging Japan to recover the postwar spirits and brotherhood. Social security is absolutely necessary for the small land with limited resources. It is also the reflection of the caring civic society.

Japan lost the war in 1945. Infrastructure were destroyed. Economically broke and lost the international standing. Post war generation adapted and the new reality with selfless attitude and unity. Government was also efficient for co-ordinating the economic development and well being of the people.

They sacrificed themselves for less well off people and the development of the competitive industries. Their contribution and upgrading of skills, social welfare and infrastructure has transformed Japan from Ashes into modern industrialized nation. During the postwar, there were some hunger, poverty and disorder. However they have energy, ambition and can do attitude for the better future.

Current homeless, inequality and unemployment are more hopeless and helpless. They are also less motivated and less disciplined. Government is also corrupted and wealth distribution is imbalanced. Tribute to the post war generations who made the Today Japan.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

sailwind. Good advice is good advice. It doesn't cost anything and you are free to accept or reject it. I think advice offered with good intent should be seen and accepted as such. Japan can then decide if the advice is relevant to their view or not. That simple.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I don't trust a fat guy talking about anything related to health.

You've hit the nail on the head there! My sentiments exactly.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Zenpun. Very well said!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Unfortunately Moore's grasp of history and Zenpun isn't quite right.

Japan regained its sovereignty in 1952 and reentered the international community as an independent nation. From 1945 to 1952 she was a nation occupied by America with an American administration. That 'caring' attitude during that time frame was directly attributable to America values and Governance.

Darn those greedy American capitalists for setting Japan on that path in the first place.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Indeed, responsible government that respects human dignity, and for the sake of the whole! I found none in Cuba, N. Korea, China, Venezuela, China ... even the Muslim world. No freedom of press for one is a form of dictatorship and brainwashing. Afraid of big brother? we know when a group of good brothers (and sisters too) rise to the challenge for goodness, and not for a quick fix. Communism was not the answer, nor socialism. America is not perfect, and the world is moving toward realism and hard choices of issues including religions and nationalism; just naming a few. America stills inspire many to struggle for human dignity and fairness. U.N started with a core value, and now this big brother has shown what? Classic example, U.N needs to reform.by standing firmly on its core principle not protecting one's own interest. Kumbaya again to Big brothers in.....

Be the Japan you created after 1945

That would be the Japan that was crafted in the shadow of an indulgent US, a Japan hiding behind Uncle Sam and under Uncle Sam's nuclear umbrella, a Japan with no real foreign policy of its own, other than neo-merchantalism to the detriment of trading partners. Yes, Micheal, I fully agree with you (not).

Then again, Moore might be getting his time-frames mixed up? Perhaps he would like to see the old prewar Japan re-emerge,the Taisho Democracy and all that. Just imagine, political instability, right- wing conspiracies, and a population whose status was that of a modern-day serfdom? What a nirvana!

Although I enjoy Micheal Moore and his shxt-stirring antics as much as the next person (his movies do make for good theater), he should not be taken seriously.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sailwind

Of course. After the post war Japan was under US administration because allied force occupied the Japan. Allied force wanted to change the Japan political system and mentality. During the Meji restoration, Japan has already modernized with western technology. Japan was the most advanced Asian nation for science. General Douglas was credited for law and order and transformed Japan into Constitutional Monarchy.

However economic development was driven by Japanese people. Without their energy, motivation and selfless sacrifice, Japan will not become the economic power. Special thanks to postwar US admin for proving the market and security. Without them growth will not be speedy like that. However they forced Japan changing the currency value. Since then Japan has lost the competitive edge. It is a double edge sword of development.

Listen to Michael Moore! He knows what he's talking about. Gambate Mike!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I would have liked to read Yuko Ogura comments on Mr. Moore's suggestions for Japan. They might have revealed something about the impact his movie will have on Japan.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Moore has gifted talent, honesty and wisdom. He was right about portraying the failure of war and corruption of previous admin in the Fahrenheit 9/11. Two wars have drained US financial resources and arm forces. Civilian lives have lost too.

In the 127-minute film, Moore accused a handful of leaders in the U.S. government and Wall Street of obtaining funds, including taxpayers’ money, all to themselves thus leading to making themselves richer and most others poorer.

There is nothing wrong about his message. Capitalism: A Love Story is also portraying the inequality and unfairness of US society. Countless people lost the job and home beyond their control. They are struggling. Fat cats from co-operate and banking sector destroyed the life hood of ordinary people. However they were rewarded with bail outs for restructuring. Despite their poor and unsatisfactory performance, greedy executives still got the bonus and pay rise. It is so unfair. It may be a love story between co-operate sector and biased government.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Moore is a deranged socialist, who wants socialisation of all nations systems.

His crackpot ideas have given him quite a following from the misguided and immoral. He bashes good Americans in every movie, this one no exception.

Doesn`t he realise that he is living the American dream and is in one of only a few countries where he can say the things he does without being sent to jail.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Good point Dick Morris. He says what he wants because America allows freedom of speech. I think he should go on a fast for one month or more, then eat only brown rice for 6-months to a year, come down to a more "everyman" weight, and THEN tell us what he thinks about the world!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

He just lectured Japan in that same 'proud' tradition as Rush's dittoheads.

He just lectured Japan in that same 'proud' tradition as Rush's dittoheads.

Some key differences:

Moore is respected around the planet, just as Limbaugh is reviled. Moore doesn't have "followers" bleating "megadittos" the way knee-jerk conservatives have. The truth factor on what Moore puts in his films is very high, as opposed to the constant stream of falsehoods from the likes of Limbaugh.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So respected he just lectured Japan on how she should act and take care of her citizens.....Could job Mr. Moore, I live in Japan your 'advice' is so welcomed.

So respected he just lectured Japan on how she should act and take care of her citizens.....

He said for Japan not to become like the United States -- a country he knows intimately. Funny how his words echoed those of W. Edwards Deming, whose name adorns the main quality prize awarded by Japanese industry. Deming was warning the Japanese back in late 80s until the end of his life not to emulate American management methods.

Moore demonstrated innate faith and respect in the Japanese people when he said, "Be Japan."

You simply hate the message and so you try to castigate the messenger.

"Quit being like us"

He despises us.

"Be the Japan you created after 1945"

Of course we had nothing to do with the Japan that was created after 1945, lol!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

He despises us.

Moore probably deplores the kind of people who throw out the accusation that he despises "us." There are things about what the U.S. has become in the decades since WWII that he despises. Arrogance, hubris, ignorance, etc.

Of course we had nothing to do with the Japan that was created after 1945

Of course, the USA of 2009 is nothing like the nation as it was in 1945.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sarge, why do you despise this man so much?

His movies say the truth about corporate USA. He loves his country but he does not like its governments. He wishes for better control on the guns, for better life for the people and better health care, for more social security. What do you have against it?

Thr man is a fraud. He has attched the very system that has provided him with fame and fortune. IOW, "A useful idiot', to borrow from Lenin.

Moore is clever and I think its good that his films get people talking about important issues. But if you do even a little research on his films, they are riddled with half-truths. Moore has an agenda his movies are propaganda. They are not fair or balanced at all.

I dont blame Moore as much as I do the average idiot consumer.

But if you do even a little research on his radio show, they are riddled with half-truths. Limbaugh...

Compared to Moore, you'd have to search long and hard for something reaching the level of a "half-truth" with Limbaugh. He's nothing but a demagogue, pure and simple. There's no appeal to reason, as with Moore.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Quit being like us.

I thought about this more, I guess his impression on Japan was samurai, sumo and kimono's.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Of course Moore is right about Japan. He is right about most of his topics. He has to be with the droves of dittohead losers yapping at his feet.

Koizumi shredded the myth of a middle class Japan with his winner dogs, loser dogs bush light garbage free market theories. The free market was proven a hoax last year, yet again. If not for the huge bush bailout the free markets would have collapsed. So indeed Japan should steer clear of that recipe for failure. Only the real losers pretend that free markets are nothing more that a mirage the rich create for the rest of society.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Moore may be right about some things but he is more often a fat, opinionated and misguided windbag.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Here's a real opportunist if ever I saw one. Does he have a point? Sure, and he milks it for millions.

Well, I'd rather have a Michael Moore "milking" an issue like George W. Bush and Co. starting a phony war (Fahrenheit 9/11), than having folks like Bush and his buddies making millions off of the wars they start. What an opportunity the September 11 attacks were to them. (Talk about your "opportunists.") Those who have profited from the Iraq war many, many times more than Moore could ever dream of from his movies must really upset you.

False choice there. We got both.

Its easy to complain about social problems...its much harder to offer practical solutions to solve them.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

For once, I do not know what to think. Seemed to have lost my government provided school books. Oh they went out with the gomi or burnable trash. Not sure what to think about this. Everyone in Japan is suppose to be treated alike right?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"It was the Japanese PEOPLE that brought Japan out of the hole they were in in the 50's. Government had nothing to do with it."

nisegaijin, you're confusing economic growth with social welfare policy. Moore was referring to the latter (which I know you don't care for, given your rabid anti-government rantings). It's ridiculous to claim that the Japanese government had nothing to do with the creation of National Health Insurance or an employment system that prioritized job security over the demands of shareholders for higher returns on their investments. To claim that the Japanese government was irrelevant in these areas is to claim that the Japanese are a naturally communalistic people who share the pie by instinct. They don't. The Japanese government had to intervene to create the kind of society where the CEO of a major carmaker makes "only" a few million US dollars per year.

"Limbaugh is clever and I think its good that his radio show gets people talking about important issues. But if you do even a little research on his radio show, they are riddled with half-truths. Limbaugh has an agenda his shows are propaganda. They are not fair or balanced at all."

Haw. But calling Limbaugh's blather "half-truths" is far too kind. He tells great big ol' lies, day in and day out.

Btw -- you can always tell when you're dealing with a FOX"news" fan when they use the term "fair and balanced" without irony, as medievaltimes did. Did you know that watching FOX"news" kills brain cells? It's true. You can look it up.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Moore should urge this kind of thing in his own country, and stop pontificating about Japanese affairs. He is a blowhard and is considered a clown by most Americans.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

By the way, Moore ALWAYS dresses like this as he considers himsel a "Working Class Hero" But in reality he is a rich Low-life Clown.

I thought after "Sicko", Blimpo said he was going on a diet. Did his fat a$$ fall off the wagon or what? He seems to be a ton bigger each time he sucks up the media attention, or does he eat it up?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Right on M. Moore! Too bad the USA cannot follow your advice as well and enact reform so that your own people can have a caring social security system. Japan should watch closely the ongoing debate in the USA and realize once the balance has been shifted to profits oriented approach, social systems, whether they be social security systems, healthcare or education systems stop caring about anything except money.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ptolemy - A while back Moore DID lose a lot of weight. And then I guess it came right back. If you look at the cover of Dude, Where's My Country? he's a lot slimmer than he was before. Or now. And he mentioned his weight loss in either that book or another book. Probably that one.

Well, you know what everyone says about weight loss. Losing it is half the battle. Keeping it off is the really difficult part.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Great! Michael Moore is now completely ignored in the U.S. as a complete moron, so now he's trying to profit in other countries. Good riddance...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Maybe it's a good idea to share the documentary with Japanese so that they can learn a lesson from what the US government has been doing until recently--aiding the ruling party who was under a false pretense of "liberal democrats."
