what about Domestic Demand? Very low, data seldom published.

what about Domestic Demand? Very low, data seldom published.

If you know where to look the information is rather easy to find and available in English too.

1) Total demand for passenger cars and commercial vehicles in fiscal year 2015 (ending March 31, 2016) is expected to finish at 4.94 million units, down 6.8% from the previous fiscal year, with sales of passenger cars and CVs, excluding mini-vehicles, totalling 3.13 million units, up 0.3% from fiscal 2014, and sales of mini-vehicles reaching 1.8 million units, down by 16.9%. Fiscal 2015 should therefore close with sales of passenger cars and CVs, excluding mini-vehicles, at about the same level as in fiscal 2014, when sales slumped following the last-minute rush in demand prior to the increase in the national consumption (sales) tax effective from April 2014..........(continued in the link)

Interesting that VW seemingly unaffected by the 'defeat device' problem.

Interesting that VW seemingly unaffected by the 'defeat device' problem.**** ah VW scandal is projected to cost them around $10billion!! with recalls and worldwide government fines, no company will be unaffected by this. Also of note, while VW and Toyota sell almost the same number of vehicles annually, Toyota makes around 25%, 4~$5billion more profit doing it. When it comes to efficiency and profitability no automaker beats Toyota.

The Camry and Prius maker sold 4.99 million vehicles in the six months through June, edging down from a year earlier.

edging down....how much (units, percentage?) from a year earlier. @Yubaru : thanks for your help, vague not clear how many units were sold domestically. Anyway, my point was that domestic sales might have help Toyota retain Top position.

Ah Toyota, forever riding on the coattails of the American Imperium, with a protected domestic market and easy access to all the major car markets around the world.

correction 2015 VW & Toyota both made about 10million vehicles, It was VW previous bosses target of becoming the worlds largest automaker by volume by heavily discounting its vehicles to get sales, result was VW $12 billion profit compared to Toyotas $18billion. So thats 50% more profit for the almost same amount of vehicles produced, hhhmmmm not hard to see which automaker is better. when VW scandal settles the billions in lawsuits / recalls will hit the bottom line hard!

U.S. dealers are under a freeze, unable to sell 482,000 Passats, Jettas, Beetles and other models under the recall.

I would hate to be a US Volkswagen dealer

VW settled with US regulators last month, wait for it! $14.7billion!!! OOOUUUCH! to put that into perspective the Toyota acceleration problems cost them $1.4billion, GM ignition switch problem cost them $2billion. VW dieselgate will cost them for many years to come. Toyota is set to make another 2trillion yen+ profit for the 3rd year running, and about 40% more than second place VW. So 2016 VW may well pass Toyota in volume sales but I know which companies shoe I prefer to be in.

Don't forget VW Group owned more brands than any other Car Company in the world. On the other hand, Toyota Motor Corporation owned fewer car brands under Toyota.

Volkswagen owns: VW, Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT and Skoda and commercial truck brands MAN, Scania and Neoplan. There are 11 brands under Volkswagen Group. These Car brands are whole owned by VW or more 50% shares. VW has counted all cars sold under these brands as VW. VW has sold more cars in China than North America.

Toyota Motor Company owns: Toyota, Lexus, Scion, Daihatsu and Hino Motors. There are only 5 brands under Toyota Motor Corporation. It doesn't count and include joint venture in China with Chinese Motor Companies.

However, Toyota Motor Corporation makes more profit than Volkswagen Group.

And refused to give it's workers a $60 a month raise. Toyota enjoys a protected home market which subsidises it's overseas operations. http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2016/02/13/business/japan-losing-drive-get-behind-wheel/#.V5vTZI6m2Rt

Toyota enjoys a protected home market which subsidises it's overseas operations i dont know any car company that isnt subsidised by its government. The vast majority of Toyota vehicles are made and sold outside of Japan

Good job by VW. Beating Japan in sales is hard to do since their market is so closed. German automakers only sell a fraction in Japan what they do in more open markets like the US.

Suoer Lib. Now VW main market is China. VW sold more cars in China than any other countries. In Australia, VW customers are leaving VW for other Car brands because its poor customer service. There are a lot of VW cars owners complaint about poor customer service and failed to fixed problems.
