cost cutting efforts to satisfy the investors (?) and perhaps one of the reasons nikkei is running so high :(

I had a Volkswagen Jetta. I had a frontal crash wearing Seatbelt. car was completely destroyed with the engine on my feets. I had neck injuries and my head crashed the windshid. guess what. Bags didbt deploy and there was never a recall.

At least these companies are been proactive instead of only moving once they are being sued. Kudos to the manufacturer of the defective product!!!

Good on them for doing something about it>>

I can't remember seeing or hearing of any recall from Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industries). It seems that they are the only maker at the moment who makes quality products, possibly a testament to their history as a plane and aviation parts manufacturer.

However, he said, there were no recorded instances of this happening.

The best time to issue a recall is before someone gets hurt.

I agree, good on the manufactures for bringing it up themselves before someone gets hurt. This inspires confidence in these manufactures. Trust the us based consumers to have a mass class action lawsuit no doubt for the inconvenience caused in having their car repaired and made safe for free! Geez, what a bunch of useless free loaders...shameful! What's next? Law suit because your car needed to be repaired and it was inconvenient!

Bastards! Toyota ?? Ok I don't own a Toyota!! But Nissan! Yes, yes I do!! It would help if they included a few more details!! No style names?? Nissan made a least 50 models in 2000 so just reading about Nissan??? How about a Nissan March?? A Nissan Duke?? A Nissan LaFesta?? Which I hope is not on any of these lists!! Also sorry to hear about Kiyoshi Mukai and that bad Volkswagen experience! Dude! Get a lawyer and see if you can sue Volkswagen !!!!!

Nissan's recall page says that they will send you a letter if your car is affected, Elbuda. They do ask customers to contact them if they have moved and not updated their addresses.

Kiyoshi, if your car was so badly damaged with engine at your feet, no airbags could deploy. Besides how old was the car? I would rather be in a VW than a Toyota anyway! cars are not supposed to be crashed at high speed.

Takata is really to blame, and I suppose that's why investors foresee some expensive liability suits coming. The car manufacturers could hardly be expected to do the destructive testing of the gas wafers that Takata quality control presumably already did, let alone do enough crash tests to find a defective one, As for why the smaller makers aren't also involved, I doubt it was because of their aircraft experience. More likely different seatbag makers were involved..

Hamajin, no they will not send you a letter. My Nissan Pathfinder was never on a recall and it, and others had major transmission issues due to a shoddy cooling system. I had to find this out by myself without help from Nissan.

Nissan's site says they will contact those affected with the airbag problem....whether they follow up on it, I have no way of knowing...

As you say, your car was not the subject of a recall, when there is a recall you get a letter.

I have read reporting to NHTSA from TOYOTA. Also it's effect on BMW and GM as well. The products were made at TK factory in Moses Lake, Washington and Mexico. I don't see BMW and GM recalling some of their models.

Kobuta Chan Apr. 13, 2013 - 02:15AM JST I don't see BMW and GM recalling some of their models.

Last year, there were over 15 million recalls, so recalls are nothing new to all manufacturers, domestic and foreign. Besides 100K-200K of trucks that GM recalled, GM also recalled over 400,000 Chevy Cruz alone, and BMW recalls 750,000 cars due to electrical problem. All the manufacturers want to clean up their act and get defects and recalls behind them so the public doesn’t question the safety of their vehicles. A higher proportion of recent recalls have been initiated voluntarily by automakers. If manufacturers handle a recall properly with a customer, the chances are greater that you gain customer loyalty than lose it. You will have things that go wrong, and some of those will be safety issues. The important thing is how you take care of it.

I once saw an aftermath of a frontal head on collision between a Toyota and a VW. The VW hardly had a scratch with only a minor bumper damage, while the Toyota's front was completely crumpled like a tin can. At least the Toyota's airbag deployed. The VW driver was completely untouched, but the ambulance carried away the Toyota driver. Japanese cars are the biggest over rated products in the planet today.
