The yen as a "safe haven" is a mystery to me. given the awful fiscal and monetary policies and authorities running them seems like somewhere to run a million miles from.

The yen as a "safe haven" yeah certainly not a reflection of the health of the J-economy. but not to worry the US will most likely have to raise interest rates that have sat at near zero for about 10yrs, when that happens watch all the $ start flowing back into the US currency. It'll take a brave speculator to bet on the $ weakening against the yen before the years out.

Not really to me. Japan has a big stable economy, with good institutions, low inflation, huge capital account surplus and it's not indebted to foreigners. I'm quite happy to be paid in yen.
