Two men were killed and two women were injured after the light truck they were riding in hit a power pole in Mutsu, Aomori Prefecture, on Friday night.

Police said the driver of the truck, Masumi Yamazaki, 20, who suffered head injuries, has been arrested on a charge of negligent driving resulting in death, Fuji TV reported.

According to police, the accident occurred at around 11:30 p.m. Friday on National Route 338. Four people -- two men aged 18 and 19, and two women aged 19 -- were in the back of the truck being driven by Yamazaki when it hit the pole. All four were hurled onto the road by the impact. The two men died and the two women sustained serious injuries, police said.

Police said the five had all been students at the same school and were on their way home from a barbecue. Police suspect Yamazaki may have been speeding as the truck failed to take a curve.

Why is this considered national, rather than local, news?

Is there some more important national news that was bumped in preference to report this instead?

I'll add boozing to that as well.

I've seen a fair few people getting full at the beach / river / campsite barbecue and then drive off home. Cops should stake these places out.

So that you forget about the seven-year-old girl found dead in a river last week and don't ask if the autopsy results are out yet.

No seatbelt and thrown from the car to their deaths. Big surprise. RIP. If only they deaths could serve as a lesson for others, but it won't.
