2 girls vandalize junior high school, inspire copycat incident

One junior high school boy and two junior high school girls have been referred to the authorities after they allegedly damaged two school buildings in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture.

The two 13-year-old girls allegedly broke in to Sakawa Junior High School in February, TBS reported Thursday. Once inside, the girls are accused of smashing windows and turning on faucets to flood the school buildings. The girls have been remanded to the Kanagawa Child Consultation Center, which will be dealing with their case.

Police quoted one of the girls as saying, "I saw something like that done in a manga and copied it."

Meanwhile, in March, a 14-year-old junior high school boy was arrested for vandalizing Kozu Junior High School using a similar method. When asked why he had flooded the school, the boy reportedly told police that he had been influenced by the incident at Sakawa. Police say charges against the boy have been filed with the Yokohama District Public Prosecutor's Office.

I saw this on the news and personally speaking here, I do believe the parents should be held accountable for the damages that these kids incurred. It was a mess.

Hm its rare to see people here copy manga i wonder why those girls decided to do this. Its a terrible thing to do but i dont think that the girls will get a harsh punishment.

@Yubaru im pretty sure thats what will happen. The parents will have to pay for the damage of the school.

When I grew up, my dad was smart enough to make a third party property damage insurance. They always paid for the post boxes that we blew up with fire crackers.

If your going to be a bad @ss, at least try to be original. Yes, parents should pay, else tax payers will have to bear the burden.

Since violence depicted in the media (fiction or non-fiction) cannot be censored, it's up to parents to teach their children right from wrong, and provide them with adequate discipline and love. Hate to state the obvious, but some people always like to blame the media (movies, games, manga, etc.) on incidents like these.

Reminds me of Ryu Murakami's book/movie "sixtynine".

They need to actually punish kids in this country, the way other countries punish their kids.

This doesn't happen, unfortunately

They need to actually punish kids in this country

Neither will this

Would you mind defining what you think should be their punishment?

where's the originality?

Info: The manga the girls mentioned is "Aku no Hana"

Ok to the thumbs down crowd.....explain yourselves! What should their punishment be? Come on now, don't be shy, you had the "guts" to thumb" down my previous post, let's hear what you have to say!

Personally, I'm a fan of hefty community service. A few kids in my hometown vandalized a building and each got 100 hours of supervised community service. I don't know much about the Japanese legal system, is that a common punishment for juveniles?

Kids face the legal music parents pay to fix the schools. No sympathy for the kids, sorry but they are old enough to know right from wrong.

How did they get caught? Surely not by shrewd police work, but rather someone couldn't help but open their mouth?

I like the idea of 100 hours of community service (say over one or two years). They can think about it.

Blame it on a manga bla bla bla. They are just 14 year old brats end of story. 100 hour community service sounds good .

Publicly humiliate them in front of their classmates and make an example of them across the country! THEN the community service after the parents pay for damages!
