Police said Friday that 210 kilograms of rice has been stolen from a house in Inashiki, Ibaraki Prefecture, in what police are treating as the latest in a series of related thefts in the area.
Sankei Shimbun reported that the rice was being stored in a padlocked granary on the grounds of a private property. At around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, the owner noticed the door of the storehouse was ajar and went to investigate. Police said the man found the padlock had been broken and that all of his seven bags, each containing around 30 kilograms of rice, had been stolen.
Police said that eight similar incidents have been reported within a 2 km-radius of Thursday's theft in May. In total, around two tons of rice have been stolen in the recent spate of thefts.

i guess its news because there is a produce thief on the loose in ibaraki, melons, rice, what next? Hate having my stuff stolen and feel for the farmers. Hope they catch them and they are made to pay back triple to everyone they stole from.

Actually, 210 kilos = 463 pounds. In the U.S. one pound of rice averages $00.724 so 210 kilos of rice in the U.S. would be worth $335.00. That's all beside the point though as telica stated, this seems to becoming something of a pattern with two tons of rice having been stolen recently.
