Participants are now expected to go to their home countries and lobby governments for the law changes.

But usual tendency in japan is to act opposite to what they are urged by foreign countries.

Don't listen to 'em, Japan! Foreigners who criticize Japan are simply Japan-bashers who don't understand the Japanese mind. To arms, fellow Japan apologists!

Hmmmm.... I wonder if this will make the Japanese media....

Simple possession of child pornography in Japan is not illegal,

Why not?

smithinjapan - sincerely doubt it. They'll probably put it down to foreigners not understanding Japan's traditions and culture.

medievaltimes - because then I suspect a huge number of people would then become criminals here. It starts with Saaya Irie, and ends somewhere unholy.

Why not?

I think you had best start out by asking why it is illegal other places. I know the question is going to spark epileptic fits of "But, but, but...!", but it seems a very simple question that no one can answer adequately enough to justify the peeing in the wind this anti-child porn congress is advocating, as if its all just going to disappear if the porn is gone.

One would think that instead of worrying about simple private possession of child porn, or prosecuting pedos that travel to countries where child prostitution is over-looked, they would muster their strength to pressure those countries to take the child prostitution situation seriously. Its a whole lot older than foreign pedos coming in to partake and it will certainly go on with barely a sputter if foreign pedos cease to go.

But here they are pressing Japan, which prohibits creation and distribution of real child porn, to ban possession? Am I the only one that thinks they got far bigger problems to tackle?

mcheeky - it's widely available and distributed here, let alone 'soft' images of schoolgirls, "U-18" videos, etc. It's not a pretty situation, and what needs to happen is a wholesale change in attitudes such that young teens are no longer looked upon as sexual beings.

That will require a frontal lobotomy for all males on the planet! Mark my words, you CANNOT change how physically matured females (which even young teens are) are viewed with out the surgery, or perhaps a Taliban style ban on ALL photography and dress ALL females in burkha. What you can change is what people do about it, but that will come with limited success.

Okay. So ban it all. Take the lot of it and burn it. Please tell me what changes.

I don't think tightening the laws will do anything. Somehow society has to educate these freaks involved in child porn that is wrong to look at pictures of children partaking in sex. It is just sick! They should all be lined up and flogged then have their genitals removed!

I just do not see this as a plan, why not have Japan prosecute Japanese who commit traffic offensives in these countries? As for images in Japan, we our own country and have our own laws for crimes committed inside Japan We have our own standards. Why not have these schoolgirls and women wear burkas to cover their skin? The countries where the crimes are committed and criminals are caught do the prosecution of the law offender. It is the job of Thailand, Myanmar, etc to enforce the law against the perverts and not simply take a fine or "pay off" If Japan gives in to this, no matter how “correct”; will the Diet become just a place to rubber-stamp the decisions of America, China, Europe Union and Russia? I say no to this invasion of our countries soverntry!

They could start by placing porn magazines on higher up shelves in convenience stores! It sickens me to take my 7 year old into 7/11 and have to walk past the sad bas**ards reading for FREE, porn manga and other paraphanalia, and for him to have to see this garbage at his eye-level!

Never mind putting the damn vitamin drinks on high shelves, put the magazines there, or better still - put them on the racks behind the counter, then the pervs will have to ASK for it!

Just checking, but is it me or is porn, especially child porn, much bigger and more accepted (I mean in the sense that its just shrugged off) than in most other countries?

I am not a fan of porn, but I am not against anyone viewing people who are of age but I personally think those who upload, take films, or share child porn should be arrested and locked up.

I feel"People who live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones"! A blind eye has been the norm these third world countries for decades as far as ican see The politcians, police are all making MONEY off the souls of children. The japanese are doing the right thing and are adressing this on Their own terms. Should a foriegn national be caught hurting a child the penalty should be castration, long incarceration and DEPORTATION!! Without appeal,i might add.

How about dressing them up in sailor suits with high white socks? Surely, that'll take one's mind out of the gutter!

mccheeky, please do many of the male posters here a favor and make it clear that you are only speaking for yourself. I, for one, do not need a "frontal lobotamy" to be able to avoid obcessing about what young girls having sex looks like. Nor do I need supposed comic strips to draw it for me. Sorry, but most males are capable of having a normal healthy sex life, and imagination, without resorting to child porn. Do you know, or care, that as many as 1/3 of the victims of this sort of crap are 3 or under? There is nothing normal about that -- that is pure sickness. And your defense of it is insulting to many, if not most JT posters.

Anyone even possesing this stuff i9s a danger to kids and promoteds abuse, by being a buyer. No buyer , no supply, think about it chaps!!

child porn is not 18-year-old women dressing up like high school girls. It is newborns to 15-year-olds forced to have sex - raped, in other words. (After 15, pedophiles feel they are too old.) Despite mcheeky's thoughts, most males don't need a brain transplant to understand that a 2-year-old is not a sex object.

borscht, agree completely. Thanks for the support.

Gary Glitter started just by possesing kiddy porn, look how that ended up.

Ban the filth and tattoo "pervert" on offenders foreheads so we all know who the dirty sods are. Taht will learn them innit!

I reckon there's a closet one on these message boards an all.

It does send a bad example. There's no free lunch.

The popularity of kiddie porn here is also a function of the way blokes are educated, raised and socialised as to the purpose and status of women.

Hasn't Japan implement such law yet? Child porn’s big business all over the world I wonder if lawmaker will at least consider to stop this dirty game. Technology is great you can now film at any time and no one can see you, and printed DVDs come out like biscuits in factory.

It unbelievable to allow child idol DVDs etc as normal public consumption. When I was 15, I got it on with a 17 year old. A simple teen relationship that ended in the normal teen way. we were not criminals as far as we were concerned. Just trying to grow up. this happened everywhere as a norm. we did not even know there was a law that prohibited it. but as an adult I cannot begin to imagine how at my age I could enter into a relationship with a kid that age. what could be the possible gain? prison time. thats all.

so why do men fixate on these jail bait babies? is the reason in the undeveloped communication skills of such men? he still only functions at teenage level in relationships? cannot deal with adult emotions? was he part of an institution that did not allow him to become an independent man but ensnared him at high school level and never let him free? or is he just a dirty f#$&er?

either way the proliferation of such material does not discourage pedophiles. It just helps them to think that abusing one of these girls is what she wants and that it is normal.

It should be on the top of the pile for Japans government. Forget your stupid mosaics in standard porn and pee and poo all over yourselves as much as you like. Just stop the production of junior idol DVDs and stop the school sex porn. Most of all ban the possession of the vile crap that infant and preteen girls and boys are subjected to.

If you look closely, you'll see that there are magazines for elementary school aged children to Jr. High to Sr. high to society-high, gradually enticing the male population to treat the females as objects. As in Period. The prices for these magazines are affordable to each age group 300 yen for the elementary, 400 yen for the Jr. High school etc. etc. and each age group is enticed to continue the "trend". It doesn't help that this is one of the only real jobs available to the female population either. So instead of just making the topic of porno an issue, lets get real about the utter inequality of the sexes that is engrained how deep in this country? There you will have the reason for the magazines sitting at eye level at every 7-11.

Youdontknow, I suppose it is easy for you to enter Japan and make remarks about what you see in the 7/11. What you saw in the 7/11 is not illegal in the United States, as for Europe I do not know or care. This article not about you being offended on legal material, this has to do about the sexual perverts and Japan taking legal action for crimes committed outside Japan. You are typical of foreigners who enter Japan and then demand that Japan change to suit them like this “UN work group”. The whole point of this article is a group of 3rd world people wanting to change the responsibility of who prosecutes perverts and not the definition of child porn. They want to continue to profit off of this trade while dodging responsibility to enforce the law. These countries are not victims but part of the problem as much as the perverts who commit the crimes.
