Glad these guys were found and are being tried in another nation -- they might just get a fair sentence instead of being let off the hook.

    Great pun there JT.

I don't suppose the journalist who wrote this headline came from the UK tabloid, 'The Sun' by any chance?

I feel equal disdain for the morons willing to pay out money for a smuggled pet that's protected under CITES. They should be stripped naked, held captive in a large, transparent glass cage and forced to eat rotten vegetables and worms for the rest of their natural lives.

Now for Japan to step up to the plate and investigate how Australian native fauna finds it's way into shops here. Allow me to refrain from holding my breath.

Sadly, smuggling parrots into the US is still a huge problem, especially macaws from Brazil. The baby birds have their wings broken, are shoven into plastic pipes, smuggled in, and sold for thousands of dollars to people who want them as ornaments in their house. With no attention they get neurotic, pluck out their feathers, and end up in avian rescue shelters like the one my Temple operates. After you work with birds mistreated like that you start thinking about capital punishment for the smugglers.

    Those turtles were lucky.
