This article is kind of confusing. It says kidnapped in the first paragraph but almost implies she went willingly in the next? Any way this is terrible and you'd think the last place you can be kidnapped at is an airport, what with all the security they have. Although for sydney this is pretty tame, there have been 10 shootings in the last two weeks. I really don't like the place, lots of potentially unsafe areas and crime seems to be ramping up big time.

-4 ( +7 / -11 )

@Jessebabay - He could have deceived her by saying he was a taxi driver? Agree it is confusing though.

Eitehr way, my guess is she is lucky to be alive. After that treatment, and when he has had enough, he probably wasn't going to just release her and say "thanks". Creepy to the max, and very scary.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

"The 48-year-old suspect met the 29-year-old woman at Sydney airport on Tuesday and took her back to his house where he confined her, police said."

I realize that holding her against her will is indeed kidnapping, but this line makes it almost sound like she just went with him willingly. Did he pretend to be a person meeting her to take her somewhere (and if so, how did he know she was coming or where she needed to go?).

In any case, at least the got the scumbag, and unlike in some nations this guy will suffer a SEVERE sentence for what he's done. I only hope the woman is not too scarred by this and can do what she went to Australia to do.

3 ( +10 / -7 )

For anyone reading my first comment. JT have now updated the article. So please ignore it if it confuses you. Now that the article is updated it makes much more sense!

7 ( +8 / -1 )

How did they come up with three counts?

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

JT l think you need to modify your story a bit as its different to what is being reported in most Australian media outlets. Your article claims she escaped when she went to the toilet yet nearly every media outlet in Australia is saying that the guy released her.

It is also being reported that she knew the guy since January and that they where friends and she had stayed in touch with him while she travelled around Australia and that when she returned to Sydney she stayed the night at his house and that the next day he made sexual advances towards her.

A bit different to the story you have portrayed here and this is what is being reported in the Australian media.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

Both the Sydney Morning Herald and the ABC report that she escaped after the man let her go to the toilet. Our story also says that she knew the man since January. The story, at this stage, is up to date.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"She was obviously very distressed but very willing to provide police with all the information that they required,” Johnson said.

Good for her, and I hope he rots in jail if found guilty.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

Cletus This Australian news outlet is reporting the same story as that above http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/raped-woman-flees-through-bathroom-window-20120419-1x8y4.html

3 ( +5 / -2 )

That is just bizarre. She probably thought of him as a friend...someone that she wouldn't expect to chain her up and assult her and therefore never even thought twice about going to his place.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@cletus yeah there are a lot of conflicting arguments online. Will be interesting to find out the exact details. Not that they exact details matter all that much. He raped her and thats clear to tell. He will be getting a pretty harsh rap for this.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I hate reading these kind of news! The dude deserves to be punished hard!!

6 ( +7 / -1 )

I dont think this 'tragedy' will triggar any anti-aussie sentiment in japan!

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

She traveled around the country and met up with him again ...............Perhaps this is a 'misunderstanding' for some western men that asian ladies has no resentment of a 'speacil relationship'!

-11 ( +0 / -11 )

@jsut-a-bigguy ... i kind of getting what your saying.. BUT ... no normal man handcuffs and rapes a girl thinking that there might be a mutual connection. He's a sicko.

17 ( +16 / -0 )

He's a sicko.

This is it. The courts will come down hard on the guy if not just to send the message , "tourists have to get better treatment than this". And so they should.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Well let's not start finger pointing, what was she doing at his place in the first place? And not to mention, why meet him again afterward? Japanese women should understand the dangers about going to another mans house, especially in another country.

-13 ( +6 / -19 )

So, old guy meets young, attractive Japanese girl. Befriends her, wins her confidence, writes nice emails and offers to let her stay at his place when she gets back. Then tries it on, gets knocked back, so ties her up and rapes her. He is calculating, deceitful and trying to manipulate and take advantage of the vulnerable. I hope they lock him up for a good while.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

It is a sad that she trusted him and he canivingly befriended her and raped her. what a shame. Did the guy think he would get away with it? Did he think she would just keep quiet about it. Must have been a horific event.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

While this comment may not be popular I personally feel that many Japanese women when travelling alone overseas are truly naive and need to take better care of themselves and keep in mind that they "aren't in Kansas anymore".

I know from friends of mine, Japanese women, who have traveled to many foreign countries, they put themselves into potentially serious and dangerous situations purely because of their naivety and ignorance. They learned their lessons and fortunately they didnt experience anything like what was written in the article.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Poor woman, but glad they caught this fleabag, anyone who robs, assaults, rapes, commits crime of any kind against a tourist or visitor from another country deserves the heftiest punishments available to the courts.

I hope this woman's opinion of aussie isnt tarnished too much by his terrible incident and that she recovers fully.

Scumbags everywhere these days.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Best wishes to the poor lady - I am glad they caught this piece of vermin. He has brought shame to my home city.

In any case, at least the got the scumbag, and unlike in some nations this guy will suffer a SEVERE sentence for what he's done.

Unfortunately, Australia is terribly soft on crime these days. This sub-human will be on the streets again in a few years no doubt. Judges seem to be swayed by the "Oh, I had a tough upbringing, my daddy beat me up" / "I'm from a disadvantaged background" kind of nonsense.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

i dont want to say this but Japanese people seem to trust people too much ..e.g. leave their wallets/iphone on the table at the food court since no dorobo in japan, crossing the road without looking thinking all cab drivers will nicely stop or vear slowly to their right to miss hitting you, give money to strangers posing as their son who needs to pay off a debt, etc.

I feel very sorry for this lady...she was too niave...unfort she should have been alot more street smart and should have sensed that something fishy was happening...some guy you met who invites you to his home sounds abit fishy to me, at least bring a friend along!

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

vctokyo

I feel very sorry for this lady...she was too niave...unfort she should have been alot more street smart and should have sensed that something fishy was happening...some guy you met who invites you to his home sounds abit fishy to me, at least bring a friend along

She had known him since January and had been regularly talking to him. She obviously thought he was a friend. Poor girl, that was here big mistake. May sound harsh but you really should not trust people so much.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

I hope she recovers quickly, what an ordeal.

And hopefully this SOB is locked up for a long long time!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I have been to the homes of many male friends over the years, and all of them have been kind enough not to tie me up and rape me.

It would be naive to go to the home of someone you didnt know. But someone you knew already and thought was a friend - where is the naivety in that? Stop blaming the woman for this - she was raped because this man is a scumbag whose ego couldnt take rejection. No other reason.

19 ( +22 / -3 )

We need extra tough sentencing for rapists. They are one of the worst type of criminals.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

The majority of rape cases around the world occurs between people who already know eachother, so it is in no way strange that the two of them had met before and the woman probably trusted the man enough to go to his place. Hope he receives maximum penalty if found guilty. And hope she gets the right counselling on top of this ordeal.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

she thought all guys are nice and awesome? feel sorry for her

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@Yubaru and vctokyo: What Nicky said.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Japanese women ARE naieve when they travel, but that does not make them responsible for rape. Ever. Or any other woman.

15 ( +16 / -1 )

This creep probably 'befriended' her just so he could carry out this assault - I mean he had cuffs and apparently bondage gear to hand. Pervert needs to rot in hell for what he did...

3 ( +3 / -0 )

many stories of "special" treatment for dudes like this in jail, have a nice life sicko :

before ||

after ( )

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Terrible! But good on her for being brave enough to escape and go to the police.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Well said Nicky. That being said, friends aside or not, going to a guy's apartment in Japan usually means the female is up for sex. Perhaps she thought it was safe to go in gaikoku and went ? Shame that something like this happens to a j chick who is out there making the most of life and being independent. Very tragic for doing something that many to most western females would have done.

Making him unable to ever have sex again seems like a fair punishment IMO.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

"Got to know him since arriving in January."

It's only April now and did she spent most of that time travelling ?

How can anyone get to know someone in such a short time. Not blaming her though ....this guy needs to be put on the hard wing and share a cell with Mr.Big !

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

morriconeloverApr. 19, 2012 - 06:55PM JST

The majority of rape cases around the world occurs between people who already know eachother, so it is in no way strange that the two of them had met before and the woman probably trusted the man enough to go to his place.

Morricone pretty much summed it up with sexual assualt, most of the victims are at least somewhat familiar with the person that commits rape against them. It is wise for world travelers especially women to travel at least in pairs. This was in no way the womans fault, but this is a lesson for all women that you need to be extra careful when travelling. Keep in constant touch with friend, relatives, and your nations embassy. Or better yet travel with others that are close to you.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

But someone you knew already and thought was a friend - where is the naivety in that? Stop blaming the woman for this - she was raped because this man is a scumbag whose ego couldnt take rejection. No other reason.

There is an assumption here that she "knew" the guy. But consider this, and since the article does not say anything other than that she had "knew" him we all know there are different levels of "knowing" a person too. Sadly the article does not give enough detail. And I never blamed the woman, only stated my opinion from experiences.

No one ever deserves to be raped and I do not blame the woman either, however I would say that she was a poor judge of character. And I would add too that I am guilty of that on occasion as well.

My heart goes out to her.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Horrible event, really. Please, be careful before you trust someone. Especially when you are in a foreign country. Unfortunately, Japanese women are often very naive and tend to romanticize "gaikoku" thinking everything is safe and nice. No, it's not! I hope this guy gets the punishment he deserves. I also hope that the girl will be able to overcome this horrible experience.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

It is a sad that she trusted him and he canivingly befriended her and raped her. what a shame. Did the guy think he would get away with it? Did he think she would just keep quiet about it. Must have been a horific event.

I have a feeling that if she hadn't escaped, she may never have gotten out alive.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Terrible and disgusting. Yeah, people need to be careful when they put their trust in people they don't well (though she had known him for a little while), but it's still not her fault. The only person whose fault it is, is this sicko rapist's... I admire her for having the courage to get out of there and relive the tale with the police, though. That takes a lot of strength, especially when I'm sure what she wants to do is forget about it as soon as possible..

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I met a Japanese woman who wanted advice about my home country as she was planning to travel and stay there and we became friends. She would write to me and tell me many of the things that were going on with her and I was so surprised at how naive she was about people. Notably, she accepted a ride from a complete stranger simply because it was raining and the stranger was insistent. She told me that she felt quite uncomfortable about going the whole time and I told her that she was very fortunate that nothing happened. That was just one of many times that she told how she trusted strange men and I had several long chats with her to explain that not all men have good intentions. She is a cute, young woman and from what she told me I could guess that the guys that were "nice" to her were really only trying to get her into bed. She was fortunate enough to have met guys that understood the meaning of no, but there were several times when I shook my head as she put herself into situations that could easily have turned bad. I told her that, "No, it's not normal for a guy to offer you to stay at his place free of charge as long as you agree to have dinner with him each night."

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Nothing can justify rape, but I agree with those above who say too many Japanese women are naive when traveling abroad. Reminds me of a case several years ago when a group of about 7 women went to a guy's home in Italy for lunch and ended up being held at sword point and repeatedly raped.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I think anyone who is trapped in a situation where they trusted someone and were betrayed can never escape the impresseion that they were somehow being naiive.

You can't do very much in life without having to trust other people and especially your friends. This guy from the sounds of it deliberately prepared this over several months and was able to execute his plan. I feel bad for the lady who obviously had the backbone to escape.

You will never hear about the hundreds of thousands of other people who met on the interenet that didn't have rape in mind. This stuff is obviously sensational.

Should women never ever trust men they meet online? That would be really sad..

2 ( +2 / -0 )

This article is kind of confusing. It says kidnapped in the first paragraph but almost implies she went willingly in the next?

Because she went to the place of detention on her own, the charge should actually be whatever Australia's equivilent to "false imprisonment" is.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Now its his turn to be confined, I hope he meets buba and has 6 accounts of aggrivated sexual assualt.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I doubt seesaw is a woman, but anyway, I hope they put a picture of this fool down under, with his name etc..to make sure other people are aware this is one crazy scum bag, and that everything down in Oz in not as pretty as Crocodile Dundee makes it out to be, so just because you are on holiday/vacation does not mean scum bag rapists say to themselves, geez, this young girl is on vacation so I guess I will not rape her?? I will not hand cuff all up and nah why make her my sex slave, since the poor J girl is only on holiday,etc..my guess these scums work just the opposite, cool, they are on holiday, smiling and taking pictures HERE IS THE BIG CHANCE FOR ANY SCUM BAG RAPIST, right??

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think all language students traveling abroad should be aware that there are some nutters out there looking to "get to know them". Are they all rapists like this A-hole? I hope not. But in any city where you have a large number of foreign students, you have hucksters trying to get something from them. In my neighbourhood I have a number of "language schools" and a large library where if you observe long enough you can see these people offering their "knowledge of the English language". The students keep changing, but the hucksters remain the same. I can't tell you how many times the same person has approached my wife saying hello in Korean, and then when that fails he goes right to Japanese. Same lines all the time. Unfortunately, the students are all too naive about these things.

As for the woman in this story... I hope she is alright.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Really sad, Japanese Women openly trust and invite me to their homes..but on the other hand I know they should maybe think abit more when going to other countries though to meet a man or any person because Australia isn't Japan. To many weirdos waiting to take advantage of their kindness and do harm.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I dont think this 'tragedy' will triggar any anti-aussie sentiment in japan!

The offender WAS an Australian man, wasn't he? And considering the political teeth-gnashing Oz put Japan though (whaling, etc), there may be.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The offender WAS an Australian man, wasn't he? And considering the political teeth-gnashing Oz put Japan though (whaling, etc), there may be.

No, these kind of stories usually don't get so much attention in local media. If, on the other hand, it was about a crime committed by a foreigner here in Japan, you would have had hours and hours of TV coverage.

In any case, I don't see any connection between this horrible case and any Anti-australian sentiment. It could have happened anywhere as there are weirdos and psychos all around the globe, unfortunately.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

the comments about Japanese women letting their guard down too much apply to all nationalities, not just Japanese and not just women.

traveling abroad promotes a sense of invulnerability or uniqueness among people, and they often throw caution to the wind. i'm sure there are many posters in this forum who do things they would never do in their hometown.

it is sad that this woman paid so dearly for this most common of human reactions. the man probably knew this, and i wonder if he hasn't done the same thing in the past.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The grouch: That is just rude to suggest that she had it coming to her. No one should ever feel threatened to visit a friend of the opposite sex's house. Real friends would never rape you. ANd how one determines who is a real friend is different but I am guessing that since she had already known the guy, she wasn't going to a complete random new guys house for the adventure of it. Sadly, this guy was a rapist that played the friend card to get her to come over. That is truely horrific.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Cletus, the only one who made a mistake is this Australian human waste who has been charged with kidnapping and sexual assuautr under Australian laws. Being naive isn't a crime.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The way some people talk, it is like women should steer clear of men altogether, ANY man, because you just never know if you can trust them. My life may be safer for never having any interaction with my male friends, but what a poorer, less interesting, less enriching, less fun life it would be. I wouldnt want to live like that.

Sh1t happens sometimes, often to people who least deserve it. Its happened to the best and worst of us, me included. My hope now is that this woman somehow finds herself able to turn this whole horrible experience into something that eventually she can see as something she can use to help her in her life and the lives of those around her, and yes, it can be done. Honestly - I was drugged and attacked years ago in a foreign country. I am lucky to be alive. But it DIDNT stop me appreciating and enjoying my male friends. It just made me very aware to watch my drink, and teach my friends to do the same. If I have even managed to prevent one repeat event for someone, then the whole hideous experience has been worth it.

It will take a long time for this woman to move on, and even to shake off the shame of what has happened to her, and the guilt that it was somehow her fault - certain attitudes in society dont help with that. But she already sounds like a tough cookie - being able to even go to the police takes a barrel-load of courage. She is going to be fine.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

@Nicky, I'm Australian and I swear that I've never thought about raping anyone, or even pestering them. All men are different. In my case, I just don't understand it. I'm the kind of guy who insists on driving the speed limit. But I'd like to break the law in this guy's case and make sure he never touches anyone again.

I'm sure a lot of other guys feel the same way.

Sad to hear about your expereince and I'm very glad you're still around.

Hope this lady gets over it.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@ReformedBasher -

I started to type this, then changed my mind, but based on what you just said I will post it:

Australia is a wonderful country and in my experience Australians - with the exception of this piece of vermin - are great people. I am sure that the vast majority of Australians are horrified by what has happened to this poor girl, and sad that it has happened to her in their country. I would feel exactly the same if this had happened in the UK.

I am certain that she will be getting the very best of help and support, through the rape crisis people (or the Aussie equivalent) who are really excellent, and through the police themselves with their victim support system who are also excellent.

She will have a long road to mental recovery from the experience, but the sooner she gets the emotional help she needs, the easier it will actually be for her in the long run. It is not an experience you can hide from however much you try. It comes back to bite you in your dreams, and any time you are vulnerable - like having a bad day. She may feel ashamed and embarrassed, stupid, guilty, burning hatred and anger, depression, anxiety, flashbacks, all of these things and more. She will have felt that things like this dont happen to "nice girls". She will soon be amazed at the kinds of people it has happened to who you would never guess because people dont generally talk about their experiences. But with the right help, she will learn that she is a rape survivor, not a rape victim, and once she has processed all her emotions, she will start to feel very powerful, very strong, and very in control of her life going forwards. That is what I mean when I say that sometimes the worst of lifes experiences can actually have a positive effect on an individual, even if it is simply appreciating every day you are alive.

And please - everyone - be careful out there. And I mean everyone - through my experiences, I have met male victims of rape too. Watch your drinks and dont even trust the bar staff. It is rare but sometimes they work with an accomplice in the bar. Drink from bottles, not glasses, and watch the bar staff open it in front of you. If someones hand goes over the bottle before it is given to you, refuse it. Buddy up with someone when you are out drinking and watch out for each other. Stay safe.

-8 ( +10 / -18 )

It seems to me it is too easy to judge, we know after all nothing of truth...Trial first. I must be weird to think sex when I see chicks coming to me very easily. Any normal men does, and life goes this way in many many inhumane AND modern countries. Basics not to go to strangers place, life is a risk at this level, man or woman. My wife told me she would never do that and my children know it already. Stupidity kills too.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Of course, if proven guilty, guy shall be severely punished. Don' t think I sympathize with criminals.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@Nicky

Thanks for replying. I appreciate you telling us what it's like and it sounds like it you toughed it out pretty good.

Your advice regarding drinking is sound. It's a shame there's a need to take precautions but it's better than the potential outcome.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I didnt tell anyone for a long time. I just wanted to go home, get on with my life, pretend it had never happened. I was so ashamed and angry with myself for falling into such a stupid trap - I had travelled all over the world. I knew better than that, I thought. But as I said, you dont get to be able to just forget it - it comes out in other ways.

Now the only thing I am ashamed of is that by not reporting it immediately that louse has probably been able to do it again to some other poor girls. By the time I went to the UK police he would have been long gone (it happened in Spain but he wasnt Spanish, he was Eastern European. But the counsellors helped me understand that this is not my fault, I was traumatised at the time, and the only person to blame for future events is the perpetrator himself. The police were great but there was a limit to what they could do so they just referred me to the counsellling centre. I hope he has been caught and is rotting in some prison somewhere. But I still feel responsible though - hence speaking up now.

Never said being naive was a crime did l buddy? However as unpopular as it sounds to many people get around with their heads up their you know whats thinking the world is just a dandy place and nothing bad will happen to them. And sadly when it does they pay the price, people need to take some responsibilities for their own actions to for getting in these positions. Now saying that l am not condoning this guy or his actions, l think they should throw the book at him. He is disgusting piece of trash. All l am saying is people need to be more careful and less trusting and naive as there are people like this out there everywhere.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

@Nicky - touched by your openness and warmth on this. At the same time somewhat surprised at the number of "dislikes" you are attracting - what is that all about?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@gyouza - thank you. It is a subject that is pretty close to my heart for obvious reasons, and I think the more it is openly talked about the more likely it is that victims of this horrible crime will be able to come forward without fear or embarrassment. The subject comes up from time to time on JT and I have thought about saying something before but finally grew a pair today for some reason - maybe that Friday feeling?!

As for the thumbs down - no idea! But its not exactly ruining my day! ;)

3 ( +6 / -3 )

@jessebaybay if someone goes to your house and you don't allow them to leave it is kidnapping :)

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Nicky - why the heck are people giving you thumbs down? I swear, people on these boards thumbs down the most intelligent, well-thought out or well-meaning comments. I don't get it. Thanks for posting, though, I enjoyed reading your thoughts.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

I hope this woman gets the help she needs, but I am sure she will. I also hope she takes the offer - she will probably feel ok, in fact intensely relieved and want to forget at first but that would be a mistake IMHE and many others.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

I tend to agree with the majority here that the guy is a scumbag. But. Some J women are not innocent. They can be very clear about what they want and don't want, regardless of the bloke's feelings, and some are seriously conniving. Quite frustrating for the bloke. Have you ever had a woman give you a bag of ropes and pegs and stuff and ask you to do kinky stuff? "Do whatever you want. ...Oh, but no sex please". I have. Could he have lost control and then panicked?

In this case we do not know without hearing his side of the story.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Unfortunately to the extreme...and that is quite typical with many Japanese female I have known.. IN our local News here in Sydney, it says she actually slept overnight there before all this crap started...... This scumbag did the sexual advances (and ultimate assault) only the next day not the first night she stayed at his Miranda home..which showed, he was calculative and premeditated his crime... Now to the legal perspective of this ..... Courts will find it tough to come up with a conclusive evidence to his probable argument of this as a consensual sexual activity as opposed to a rape...Therefore unless there is a solid evidence (which might have been found by the police already to arrest him immediately after) to support the claim of (a) kidnapping (arguably she went along on her own decision and stayed overnight with him) and (b) rape or any form of sexual assault (arguably he can mount the case against her for giving the false impression of consent by staying overnight at a single male house), and there is a victim's willingness to pursue this matter to the end AFTER she returned to Japan to start a new life, I am afraid this case will not be a cut & dry to put this criminal monster away for life...My angle here is......Ladies, when you come here, sure you can have all the fun and enjoyment but don't, please don't exonerate your usual conservation and control......There are many different kinds of Aussies....mostly good but there are also a lot of thrash...like this scumbag..

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Has the concept of innocent until proven guilty been completely forgotten here?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Hmmmm...handcuffs. She didn't know him enough to overnight at his place. Just you and him? He may have seen her acceptance as an indication that she would give it freely. When he was proven wrong he couldn't go back after all his imaginings. Ok...he should have more self control...and as for her I can't see why she would overnight at the house of someone she barely knows. She could have and nothing happened. However, that would be a risky thing to do. Anyway, at least she wasn't killed and cemented in a bathtub.
