Keio University student arrested for instigating girlfriend's suicide

A Keio University student has been arrested for allegedly driving his girlfriend to suicide after persistently sending her countless messages saying "You have no reasons to live anymore," and "Instead of cutting your wrists, why not just kill yourself by throwing yourself out the window or over a bridge.”

According to police, on Nov 8 last year, 3rd year Keio University student Yasuchika Watanabe, 21, began sending his 21-year-old fellow classmate and girlfriend, 10 malicious messages through the mobile phone app LINE, Fuji TV reported Saturday.

The next day, the woman committed suicide by jumping from her apartment building in Minato Ward, Tokyo.

After investigating the details of the suicide, police discovered the phone messages and arrested Watanabe on Friday.

What a piece of cr@p. I'd like to send him some Line messages like "Don't drop the soap" or "How's it feel being your cell mates love toy".

What is with these jilted guys who feel they have to take retribution out on their exes??!! I thought the saying was "Hell hath no fury like a WOMAN scorned", not "Hell hath no fury like an IMMATURE VINDICTIVE WUSS who can't handle being rejected by his girlfriend."

"What a piece of cr@p. I'd like to send him some Line messages"

I agree , and with JP and China getting close to the "ON" position it loks like more and more like the only one who can strighten this country out is the "white man" ...again...

I usually don't agree to blame someone else for another committing suicide but in this case, I hope this gets jail time.

While this guy is a prize ~~~, I'd say that sending spiteful messages on LINE is a pretty weak argument for driving his girlfriend to suicide. It's easy enough for her to tell him where to get off and block/unfriend him. There are other factors at play here.

Probably sending threatening letters as well even though there are no evidences yet. Passive-aggressiveness at its worst I suppose.

He sounds like an as hole but you can't arrest someone for encouragement or suggestion of an act, only for planning surely. I doubt I would be arrested if I sent messages to someone saying "Rob a bank, rob it, go on do it!" repeatedly. You can't be responsible for the free choice actions of another person.

@ oikawa - Good point. All that being "arrested" means is he was escorted to the station for questioning and paperwork. I doubt they will make any criminal charges stick. He is guilty of being an @ hole though.

Not a single damn thought about the weakness of mind of the girl he exploited. What's with you people? For some reason, she thought the world of him, then things changed; he berated her no end and she fell for ritual. Damn the bastard, and pity the girl!

2 ( +5 / -3 )

So, out of the blue, he just decided to start sending the girl he was going out with these messages and she decided to dutifully comply? What this guy did is heinous but the girl should have sent him a message back saying eff you and then just deleted the "chat." There has to be more to it than what is in this story

If he didn't push her, he didn't commit a crime.

Happy birthday Joseph Michael! I hope this is not a curse for you.

This guy needs to spend a long time in prison and work out where we went wrong.

How some japanese people can be so weak?? I mean, a LOT of them. I'm afraid there are things about this culture you would never understand, no matter how many years you live here.

Of course, I feel terrible for her and those who loved her.

Of course, he seems like a terrible human being.

Not sure, however, how this qualifies as a crime. I'm curious what the actual charges and potential consequences are. Surely sending threatening or malicious mail could be criminal, in terms of stalking or something similar, but I don't see how this rises to the level of murder or manslaughter.

Oh, yes indeed you CAN be locked up for that in certain circumstances. It falls under "encouraging or assisting a crime".

Assuming that suicide in Japan is a criminal offence, Watanabe is in deep proverbial.

Wow! She must have been heads over hills for this selfish arrogant scumbag, but why would she kill herself i would tend to think her family loved her just as well. Why kill yourself

As I understand it, being arrested and being charged are two different things. Being arrested is necessary for an investigation to proceed in a particular way. In theory it also protects the rights of the suspect. Being charged is when the police feel they have a case and wish to proceed to prosecution.

Luckily, this kind of thing doesn't happen more times than it does. Unfortunately, such immaturity has more fatal consequences than it should.

Can you also arrest anyone who cruelly broke up with someone who later committed suicide?

There's a lot of things missing in this story. She was still his girlfriend at the time? Was it just a fight? Was it a joke? Was his phone hacked?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

What's the charge? Reckless endangerment. She should have blocked his account. There have been a number of similar cases but I don't think anyone has ever been found guilty.

What a stupid and disgusting egoist guy, Watanabe you!! You should be condemned by either death sentence or a life sentence, but not less!!!

2 ( +4 / -2 )

21 years old and at KEIO University?? You would think this guy would be more intelligent and know better than to do something so stupid and horrible to make a poor, innocent girl end up killing herself. What an EVIL BASTARD!! May he burn in HELL!! RIP poor young lady!

Poor girl.

Real quality material here.

The first paragraph says he sent her countless messages. The second says he began sending (her) 10 malicious through the app Line and that she committed suicide the next day. First. the story is a little vague so it's hard to come to any real conclusions other than that he's a real jerk and she was fairly unstable. Second, while I in no way condone sending such messages to anyone, I would be curious as to where the legal line is drawn when it comes to "instigating the suicide" of another. Is one malicious message enough to get you arrested? Would it have to be more than 5? Would you have to have a proven knowledge that the person who committed suicide was indeed suicidal? What period of time has to have been covered? Is one day after sending such messages enough? Would it have to be a week? It just seems like there would be so many contingencies in a situation like this that it would be extremely difficult to fairly prove a case, one way or the other.

Nice to know that there are always going to be a couple of posters who apparently feel that prison rape is an amusing and acceptable thing and those that are happy to condone others to hell or otherwise advocate violence. Consistency has its comforts, I suppose.

That's one way to terminate a relationship, I guess.

I can't begin to imagine how long this scum bartard kept slandering the poor girl driving her to her own death!! She probably had a bright future ahead and let this LOSER walk in to destroy it. Let him rot in a hell cell... RIP poor young woman !!

Obviously he is a horrible person. However, I fail to see what "crime" he committed. There are many horrible people out there, but that in itself is not a reason to arrest them.

What a selfish pr*ck, what happened to empathy!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

This is very sad. Mobbing is hard even for strong minds, but I wonder if the girl did not have any self-esteem at all? Was she so totally depending on her boyfriends opinion? Sometimes I think that women in Japan are too obediant/weak against men. For example, if a husband in my country required his wife to prepare a hot bath for him in the evening and to cook at least 3 different types of dishes for dinner, she would probably ask him if something is wrong with his brain.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Not a good way to live or die!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

She's probably wanted to killed herself and the messages are just excuse, I think the problems go deeper than few messages that could be easily ignored for someone to killed themselves.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

hmm...how do we all know that she wasn't stalking him and telling him that she was going to kill herself if he broke up with her and his messages were just in response?
