Police on Sunday night arrested an unemployed 31-year-old man for taking a 16-year-old girl hostage at knifepoint in a shopping mall in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture.
According to police, the suspect, Koichi Tanizawa, grabbed the girl from behind in a bookstore on the third floor of the You Me Town shopping center at around 5 p.m., held a 10-cm-long fruit knife to her throat and ordered everyone out, Fuji TV reported. He demanded to talk to police witnesses said
After 20 minutes, police managed to subdue Tanizawa. The girl was unharmed. Police said the two did not know each other and are questioning Tanizawa about his motive for taking the girl hostage.
