Man arrested after stabbing police officer in Kyoto

A 22-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday morning after he allegedly stabbed a police officer in the back on a street in Kyoto.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Hiroyuki Okamoto, a resident of Settsu in Osaka, stabbed the 23-year-old officer at about 1:30 a.m. in Shimogyo Ward. The officer, who was wearing a protective vest, did not suffer any injuries in the attack, police said.

The officer was quoted as saying that he noticed the suspect loitering and asked him his name and occupation, Fuji TV reported. At that point, Okamoto produced a knife with a 16-cm-long blade and stabbed the officer. Another police officer, who was nearby, rushed to lend assistance and restrained Okamoto.

Okamoto was quoted as saying that he just wanted to kill someone, even a police officer, Fuji TV reported.

Man this is so screwed up, all too often we hear these same excuses "just wanted to kill someone" Throw these scumbags to hungry lions and get rid of them for good. Sick losers in life.

If you're questioning the subject and at that point the suspect produces a knife, how the hell does he manage to stab you in the back?

Good reason for the death penalty. Rid the world of these type of scumbags who don't care about someone losing their life and the affect it would have on the family.

Perhaps you see the knife coming and don't want to be stabbed in the face, know you can't stop it with your bare hands, don't have time to pull out your billy club, so you turn away. Perhaps with the knowledge that your protective vest might stop a knife?

Good reason for the death penalty.

There is no good reason for the death penalty.

When I read the headline I thought to myself, "I wonder what his motive was. He just wanted to kill someone?" And, sure enough, there it is in black and white. Seriously, what is wrong with these people? How many times a year do you hear the same statement? Why? What happens in this society to make people think like this? Combine this with the random slashers, bullies, panty thieves and infanticide rates and you can only conclude that Japan is not really a very nice place and has some major issues with reality. I blame manga!

WTF? I hope this man never see the light of day again. And I certainly hope he never tries to kill anyone again !

That was the first thing I noticed when reading... How is that possible to do both at the same time...Something doesn't add up in the story !

If you think only Japan has major crime issues then you need to look at the rest of the world a bit better. Japan has crime like any other country however compare the crime to places like LA, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico, parts of London etc then you will know what makes a place not very nice. Blame manga? Here we go with the blame manga card. Plenty of people read manga and watch anime without having the urge to kill someone. Same as the vast majority of people who play violent video games. They know the difference between reality and something like a game or story. Murders, rapes, bullying and thieves have been going on since the start of humanity. Long before manga or video games were invented.

so much blood in the kansai area..

KariHaruka - You are very wrong and I fear your view is biased. Yeah, there are plenty of violent places all over the world, but only in Japan do 'regularly' find 'Naoki Average' running around with a knife wanting to stab or kill anybody within range with no motive other than have a serious mental issue. Do you remember what happened in Akihabara? Violence in other countries is usually linked to robbery or thuggery, but not some nutter having a bad day and just wanting attention. Sorry

@KariHaruka

But this article was about Japan, no? Not about Rio, LA or London. I'm definitely with Disillusioned here: nowhere in the world do there seems to be so many people just suddenly losing it. I don't blame manga (I suppose that was said jokingly), I blame the problems many Japanese have to ventilate and to express their feeling in a meaningful way, always shying away from whatever argument might occur. Japan has much more pent up stress than most countries.

Rather then just killing them after they commit the act. They need to treat the problem before it explodes into an incident like this. Anyone who has ever lived in Japan knows that stigma that surrounds people with mental problems. So great in fact that it causes some young mothers to take their child's life because they have "problems". I've read articles where mother's kill their child simply because it had ADHD and was a "hyperactive".

If they don't get treatment when they're young they could end up doing something crazy like going on a stabbing spree "just to kill someone".

One other thing bothers me about about this incident. Did he stab him, or didn't he?

Quote: "The officer, who was wearing a protective vest, did not suffer any injuries in the attack, police said."

So he stabbed AT him, OK, he prodded him, yes, he attempted to stab him, fine, but the knife bounced off doing no harm? Did it tear the outer layer of the vest, or did it lodge in the fabric, I wonder?

Is this not an attempted stabbing?

Puzzled.

To answer my own question I had a read-up on the J news and it seems that he: "Kiri-tsuketa" 「切り付けた」which really means he 'struck' or 'slashed at' the cop.
