Police have arrested a 50-year-old man on suspicion of cutting a schoolgirl's skirt on a train at JR Minami-Urawa Station in Saitama Prefecture.
According to police, the suspect, identified as Gakuto Miyashita, a company employee, was waiting on the platform of the JR Musashino line at around 7:55 a.m. Thursday, TV Asahi reported. When the train stopped, Miyashita got on, slashed the 15-year-old girl's skirt with a cutter knife and then got off just before the train doors closed.
A policeman on patrol noticed Miyashita repeatedly doing this as trains came in and grabbed him.
Miyashita has denied the charge and requested only to speak to a lawyer, police said Friday.
There have been at least 20 similar incidents on trains in Saitama Prefecture since last November and police are questioning Miyashita about his involvement in those cases.

@therougou it could be the policeman saw something odd but wasn't sure what happened then when he got a clear view of it a subsequent time it was enough to arrest as well as confirm what he was doing on the previous attempts.

I remember some decades ago when I was teaching at a girls' jhs/hs in Japan, from time to time a pervert would surreptitiously cut a girl's skirt on one of the crowded trains. A senior-level female colleague at the time had needle and thread at her desk which she told me was to mend skirts that had been slashed. Oddly, school faculty didn't seem to take this too seriously, and wouldn't even bother to report these incidents to the police.
Maybe the fact that this particular incident made the news indicates that people take these sorts of crimes more seriously than they used to, and that these incidents are less common today than they were back then.

Saitama trying to up the chikan or sick crimes ante once again. What's amazing this time around is that we're not hearing the immediate, "I just wanted to see what happens" excuse, but a person flat out denying what a police officer literally saw the person doing.

A lot of what is reported depends on the producers and editors that determine what is published or broadcast. In almost all cases, media ratings are the key both in Japan and the USA. Ratings determine the amount of money that advertisers are willing to pay. Sadly, crime, disasters and special events such as sports that affect others and not the viewers or readers themselves get the most attention and the sales. When it comes to crime, very little statistics are given. The media plays upon the emotional reaction of the viewers and readers.
Here, it is an awakening for all. Not so much the crime, but to question WHY are these things happening.
Are these kinds of crime rare?
