Police in Sano, Tochigi Prefecture, on Thursday night arrested a 71-year-old man on suspicion of fatally stabbing his 65-year-old wife and their 43-year-old son at their home on Wednesday.
According to initial police reports, Iekazu Nukui, 71, returned home from work at around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday and claimed he found his wife Yoko collapsed in the kitchen and his son Hidetomo near the entrance, Fuji TV reported. Yoko had been stabbed in the stomach and Hidetomo had been stabbed in the neck. They were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Nukui was quoted by police as saying that after he found his wife, he saw his son holding a knife, with both his hands bloodied, before he collapsed.
There were no signs that anyone else had entered the house. Police at first suspected that Hidetomo stabbed his mother and then himself.
However, upon being questioned further on Thursday, Nukui admitted to killing his wife and son but spoke incoherently about his motive.
