Police in Tokyo's Suginami Ward are questioning a 27-year-old man over his involvement in 10 arson cases involving bicycles and other objects in the area.
According to police, the suspect, Yasutaka Yoshida, has confessed to setting fire to a cover on a scooter in a parking lot outside an apartment building in Koenji on Nov 5, Fuji TV reported.
Police said Yoshida, who works as a part-time bartender, has admitted to the crime and quoted him as saying he did it as a joke with no particular motive.
Yoshida is also being questioned about nine other arson cases in the area between September and Nov 5, police said, adding that street surveillance camera footage has placed him near the scene of at least three fires within 30 minutes of each other before dawn on Nov 5.
