Post office robber stopped by police slashes own throat

A man robbed a post office in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, and then attempted to take his own life when stopped by police.

According to police, a man brandishing a knife entered a post office in Kamitawara at around 5 p.m. on Friday and demanded the cashier hand over 50,000 yen in cash, said police. The robber then took the cash and escaped by car. The cashier was not injured in the incident.

TBS reported that around an hour later, officers stopped the vehicle, which had been identified from its license plate. When they tried to question the driver, he slashed his own throat with a knife. The man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where doctors described his condition as serious.

Police say the suspect has yet to regain consciousness.

OK.... NO.1 Most important Rule in even Basic, vary vary vary Basic Police work...

When you stop someone, obviously this was in "Hot Pursuit," you first and foremost, get control of the suspect, search him, and restrain him... Obviously, this wasn't just some random stop, because you identified him based on his License plate (as this article reads) So right away you knew you were dealing with someone suspected of Robbing a Post Office with a deadly weapon...

What part of that equation is too hard to understand...? It's common sense... You restrain and search him, before you do ANYTHING....! Thereby liberating him from any weapons.... BASIC BASIC BASIC...!

But you will read at least 5 more "clown" like incidences this year, where cops, suspects, or innocent bystanders are needlessly injured or killed as a result of Incompetent police work... Guaranteed!

Maybe the fact that they just pulled him over and he was still sitting in the car? and just attempted to begin to ask him questions when he did it had something to do with it? You know police work isn't like what you see in the movies.

Were you there China? Did you see what happened? No? Then probably best not to draw conclusions eh.

The suspect was in a vehicle and the cops have to approach the vehicle before they can "get control of the suspect". I imagine he slashed himself before the cops could get to him but I don't know for sure as I wasn't there.

On the one hand, the police probably didn't expect a suicide attempt from someone over this - it does, however, bring into question (yet AGAIN) the methods and rules of engagement between police and perps. The police are simply out of touch with reality, allowing suspects to run away and being unable to efficiently restrain the suspects they DO catch.

Somebody put it very nicely, all police work is not as clean and happy as what we see on tv! Many crazy, messed up people out there, this guy slashing his own throat, sounds like what of these crazies! Good thing he did not attack the police and just himself!

Did not even have the guts to gut himself.. they should have let the crazy bleed out.. but that is just me.. I do not have sympathy for people like this that take up police time, tax payer money, hospital beds and then go out and repeat offensive behavior that is not sane, productive or contributes to the good of social health and growth.

I wonder if a valid argument exist, besides the comprehensive barrier of declination to save face; forms a premise that "may" substantiate that post war crimes in JP have an elevated propensity to unravel when "gaigins" are involved, due to multifarious motivational arbiters, that "may" reside inherently within the JP justice system, and perhaps to unspecified degrees the "effect" of the convivial configuration, particularly for "factions" influence on such issues within the JN society?

What a poor act of desperation. I hope he doesn't die though.

desperate guy...

All for 50,000 yen.

yes it would be great for him to live so he can maybe do something dangerous and crazy again.

Congratulations to the cops for saving his life. If his condition is serious then he probably severed the carotid artery in the neck, and he could have bled out in under 30 seconds (1 minute tops).

Most people never see a wound like this, the blood spurting sometimes meters from the body, and the sheer quantity of blood as well as the way it is spraying everywhere... well, I've seen new doctors freeze up for a critical few seconds trying to figure out what to do.

Some people may be criticising the police work here, but their first aid training is very obviously excellent.

Another knife tragedy in Japan. They should outlaw knives they kill too many people.

"When they tried to question the driver"

Sorry, it doesn't say, "when they pulled over the driver," or, "as they were pulling the driver over..."

Maybe the fact that they just pulled him over and he was still sitting in the car? and just attempted to begin to ask him questions when he did it had something to do with it? You know police work isn't like what you see in the movies.

Oh, I'm sorry... Maybe it's just a coincidence that these kinds of incidences happen about every other month here in Japan, when-ever there is a JCop Involved... Just coincidence huh...? Let me see, a few months back... Man stabbed to death by criminal who broke into his house, while cops standing there... Coincidence...?

You know police work isn't like what you see in the movies.

That's EXACTLY WHY these kinds of Police procedures are FUNDAMENTAL... Because people die when they are NOT followed... As almost happened here...

"They'll never take alive!"... sounds like this guy was seriously wired. I mean trying to kill yourself while being questioned by the police after robbing a post office? Slight over-the-top reaction there. You would expect that from maybe a terrorist with a death wish.

As for the criticisms of the police, if the man was still in the car at that point how are they to blame? All the report says is while being questioned - as far as we know it could have been as soon as they tapped on his window...

he demanded just 5 man..?? He may be a criminal, but at least he's not greedy.
