Savage murder rocks city in Toyama

Police in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, are looking into the background of a man who was brutally murdered on Tuesday night in what appears to be a grudge killing.

Company employee Teruo Hamatani, 52, was stabbed to death in front of his residence at around 8:45 p.m. by an unknown individual in a crime that stunned the local community with its viciousness. NTV quoted police as saying the attack was particularly savage, with the killer having stabbed Hamatani 23 times in the face, shoulders and chest.

Hamatani's wife found her husband's body, police said.

Police said they believe the killer knew where Hamatani lived and what time he usually returned home from work each night, and lay in wait for him. No money or any other personal belongings were taken from the body, leading police to believe the killer had a grudge against Hamatani.

Police said Friday that bloodstains were found on a 170-cm fence at the back of Hamatani's home, adding that the killer most likely made his getaway by climbing over the fence and then running along an alley.

Shortly following the discovery of the body, police said eyewitnesses reported having seen a strange car and suspicious person in the vicinity of the crime scene.

23 times in the face sounds very, very personal.

You must ask yourself what would make a man go ape shit and stab another dude 23 times??? My guess and the oldest reason in history, the victim was probably boinking the guy's wife. He found out, then went Medieval on the dude!

I'm thinking pachinko problem and loans that he couldn't pay. I'm thinking the Yakuza want to send a message with this guys murder. I could be a crime of passion, but that would be one angry woman. I'm going to stay with my first thought... the Yaks..

I doubt it was yakuza. That is not how they kill. It definitely looks like a crime of passion or something ritualistic. The story doesn't say what his work was or what company he worked for, so we don't know if he could have cheated someone or got someone into trouble.

Love all the speculation! My theory is, he was attacked by a crazy person. Tell me I am wrong! Stabbed 32 times in the face and upper body definitely means someone was a few sandwiches short of a picnic. Let's just hope they catch the loon quickly.

I know a friend of the deceased. Horrible matter.

God this is a horrible attack... and I can't even imagine how his wife reacted when she saw him lying there. I hope they catch the murderer soon.

eyewitnesses reported having seen a strange car

What's that exactly? A car with no windows? Wings? Painted bright pink?

I don't know but I have a feeling people usually know the cars that go through and/or park their neighbourhood.

The attacker could be a she.

The face suggests it was personal, and someone who knew the victim well and saw them frequently, perhaps every day. It suggest an intimate relationship. The Japanese taboo against touching other people's faces is very strong, it is a gesture reserved for lovers and close family.

It is highly unlikely that a random killer, contract killer or someone who didn't know the victim would choose such an "intimate" place to stab the victim.

The number of strikes suggests a great deal of rage, far beyond the casual "spurned lover". The attacker would have had to have felt that they were abused beyond any reasonable limit, probably over a protracted period.

The face is also likely to produce a lot of evidence. The angles of the strikes and areas struck should produce the height of the attacker. That all the strikes are to the upper body (face, chest, shoulders) suggests an attacker taller than the victim, suggesting a male attacker (unless the victim was unusually short).

I'd narrow the suspect pool down to younger males, 18~26, tall, who had a long association with the victim.

I'm guessing that it was a grudge over something quite trivial, as is often the case. Either way, a savage killing. And to make the situation even more horrible the wife was the one to find him that way. Awful stuff.

What is happening here? Use of hard drugs? A loan gone bad? To many unknows here however,

The killer wanted the face destroyed, Those types of injuries during a murder usually means that a husband found out that the dead man was very close and personal with the murder's wife or a distrat lover that was spurned by the deceased such as not going forward with a promised devorce then marriage.

All salarymen in Toyama must be terrified tonight : maybe they will be the next victim of this crazed killer. RIP, poor salaryman.

Whats worse shot once or stabbed 23 times. People talk about the misuse of guns but WOW what about knives!

Definitely not a contract killing due to the passion involved.

But who knows what passions drive the J-person to kill. Lived there for donkey's years and married one too - and I still can't fathom what makes them tick!

I'm with Frungy on this one, no disrespect to the victim or family, but my bet is it was a young man who had a physical relationship with the victim. Maybe the victim told him it was over, or was going to "out" him.

23 times in the face indicates he was knocked senseless first or the first blow knocked him unconscious. Pretty hard to stab someone who is conscious 23 times in the face. Anyway poor guy and very sad for his family. I am sure they will catch this madman.

how vicious! who could have done such a thing?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

For my thumbs down voters, the only reason I brought that up is because I've reviewed criminal cases dealing with similar situations. One in particular comes to mind. A spurned male partner snapped and stabbed his soon-to-be ex multiple times in the face and neck with a pair of scissors killing him. So I didn't just make up some smack to stir the pot.

never play around with people honor or treat others disrespectfully no matter if they are your subordinate or have low status in the society. Human can only endure so much before things turn black... (Just a hunch). Still I hope the murderer will be caught immediately and to keep the neighborhood safe...

Anyone who has ever watched an episode of CSI could type that rant about knife stabbing and passion by heart. I imagine the downvotes are for being a somewhat pretentious couch investigator.
