Police said Monday they are looking for a man who burst into a woman's apartment in Nishi-Tokyo and stole 40,000 yen from her.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 11:50 p.m. Sunday. TBS reported that the 21-year-old woman, who was on her way home from work, got off the train at Hoya Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro line and walked home. As she opened the door to her apartment and went inside, a man barged in right behind her and demanded money.
The woman told police she handed over 40,000 yen and the man fled. The woman was not injured, police said.
The intruder was described as being in his 20s and 160 cms tall. Police believe he followed the woman home from the station.

She's lucky it was only money. It pays to be aware of your surroundings, especially when entering your apt/house.

Women should be packing some kind of self defense device be it an audible alarm, pepper spray, or taser, all of which are legal in Japan. Either that or take self defense classes.

I didn't know pepper spray and tasers were legal in Japan.
CrazyJoe
Tasers aren't but pepper spays and stun guns (that meet Japanese standards) can be legally purchased in Japan.

Thumb to the larynx and scream like hell, that should scare the beejeezus out of the punk and wake all the neighbors.
The Chronic
Sorry...I meant stun guns...not tasers..thanks for the correction.

Having taught police defensive tactics in the US I can handily recommend pepper spray, but most stun guns are worthless. We used to require every class participant to get hit with a stun gun. (75,000 volts) I've been hit more than 40X in an afternoon. They feel like a bee sting and the noise is intimidating at first. But you have to hold them in contact with the assailant for 3-5 seconds to get the reaction everyone is looking for. If you can hold it on someone for that long, you're strong enough you don't need it. Add to that the fact that you can fall victim to low batteries, and you're just better off using stun guns as clubs. Save your money for pepper sprays or a box cutter from the 100 yen shop.

Why is everyone blaming the woman? That's stupid.
The Chronic
@neonFraction...who exactly here is blaming the woman???
I said woman should arm themselves for protection. Some here are giving self defense / awareness of your surrounding tips. Others are saying they were glad it was only a robbery and not worse.
I see no blaming by anyone.........The exact opposite actually.

It's an oft parroted PC talking point these days where nothing bad that happens to you is never in any way even partly your fault or responsibility (extra especially if you are a women). Dare to suggest that a women could have avoided becoming a victim of robbery or rape by some action of her own and you could be strung up by your thumbs. I am a pretty far left liberal on most issues I think, but some of this politically correct groupthink that swills around the intrawebs just makes me shake my head.

Some apartments and houses have cameras installed which could identify the robber but giving up 40,000 yen and not getting hurt was smart.
