With apologies to Carly Simon:
I'll bet you think the show is about you, don't you, don't you?

Why have a double set of envelopes?
Why not just leave the official envelopes in a stack behind the podium and the presenters can just take the top one and announce the winners.
There wouldn't be any of these embarrassing mix-ups.

Who cares? It is done, over with, and most are moving on. Let go of it.

I love how PwC threw the 2 people under the bus instead of taking full responsibility. For this, just give La La Land an honorary Best Picture award or an asterisk next to it in the Academy Awards history book.
Bill Murphy
This IS Hollywood we're talking about, isn't it? Ditto to Tokyo-Engr.

Well, the award category is written on the envelope, as well as the fact that the award read Emma Stone, so the 2 presenters are partly responsible for not bothering to read or look at what they were holding all that time..
Dan Lewis
@dcog9065 - Exactly. It looks like Faye has Dunaway with her glasses when she needed them most!

@Sense - Nice one, my friend !
Dan Lewis
Update- turns out someone handed Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway the wrong envelope. My bad.
Frederic Bastiat
They were handed the wrong envelope but didn't bother to look at the envelope. They are also to blame.

Different colored envelopes for different categories is fail safe.
lostrune2
On the paper in the envelope, the category is printed way below the winner's name and in fine print.
Maybe they should start putting the category above the winner's name instead, and in large letters.
(BTW, there are 2 envelopes for a couple of reasons: (1) the presenters can come from the left or right of the stage, and (2) if something happens to one of the envelopes, there's always a backup envelope right away.)
Bill Murphy
Only repeating what I heard, but it looks like Bonnie & Clyde got ambushed again.

Literacy and attention to detail are very important resources to have when information is conveyed by writing. Something our schools should probably emphasize.

The PwC guy in charge of the envelope was too busy tweeting backstage to notice the mistaken envelope, lol

One error and the world collapses... people make mistakes. It happens.
