Popular search engine Yahoo! Japan says its most popular searched item in 2016 was the name of actor Dean Fujioka. Each year, Yahoo! Japan lists people and products which attract the highest number of searches.

Upon hearing the news, Fujioka said, "Even though I have been away from Japan for a while, so many people in Japan are interested in and search for me, and I thank them very much," Sankei Shimbun reported.

Table tennis player Ai Fukuhara topped the athlete category, Ryucheru the model category and Mitsuki Takahata was the No. 1 searched for actress. In the cultural field, the blockbuster animated film “your name.” topped the movie category, Pokemon GO was most popular in the game category, “Sanadamaru” was No. 1 in the TV drama category and, “PPAP” by Pikotaro came first in the buzzword category.

Yahoo! Japan calculated the average number of searches a day, from Jan 1 to Nov 1 in each field and category.

People still use yahoo? And why would anyone be interested in searching for this guy who I never heard of until now when there are so many other things people could be searching for?:-/

People still use yahoo?

It's been the main search engine in Japan forever.

Not sure if this item is a (bad) reflection of Japan, Japanese who use search engines or Yahoo ...

The most popular searches are about sex.

Yahoo search engine is nowhere near the top of the list anymore.

In fact, I don't think Yahoo Japan has anything to do with Yahoo in the rest of the world. I remember being able to log on to my email account on every Yahoo site in the world, including the Chinese and Korean Yahoo websites.......except Yahoo Japan - Japan just has to be different to the rest of the world.

Christ, haven't heard anything from Fujioka in years. How weird.

bones: "People still use yahoo?"

In Japan, yes, and as with a lot of websites here it is chaos both pre-search and post. It's also the land where people still buy CDs and where newspaper subscriptions are up.

"And why would anyone be interested in searching for this guy who I never heard of until now..."

Maybe they decided to search for a Japense Eddie Furlong. Who knows. Is Terminator 2 on TV?

domtoidl: "The most popular searches are about sex."

We are in rare agreement, here, and not only that, but sex is the most popular search for every single category possible; athlete, best mother, entertainer, you name it. :)

It doesn't. It's a separate legal entity, and is owned by Softbank in Japan. It has pretty much zero connection to Yahoo in the rest of the world, other than the name. They don't even use the same search engine as their backing - one uses Google (Japan I think) and the other uses Bing (America I think).

Nice factoid as no more than 35% of Japanese Internet searches are through Yahoo.

Except for staring at their phones on trains, in coffee shops or, unfortunately, walking down the street, Japanese use of the Internet as a tool is overstated. In general, Japanese use of computer technology in both business and in government lags North America and the EU. Manufacturing design and finance (not retail banking) are about the only sectors where Japan is up to date.

educator:

Are you perhaps thinking of a different Fujioka? Maybe Hiroshi?

No, I'm pretty sure it was Dean, because I remember, for some obscure reason, he had an English name. Not that I know much about him in the first place.

Who is he?

I am really sure this new wave of popularity of Dean Fujioka is related to Yuri!!! on ice. He is the singer of the beautiful opening "History Maker". Probably all of you are adult men so no surprise you don't know this series, you are not the target for this anime, unlike many millions of young girls around the world who are currently crazy for it.

I love him!

Dean Fujioka has been busy indeed all of you who made comments on here. He finished a jdrama produced by Amazon Japan called 'Happy Marriage' and this Sunday another jdrama he has worked in this year, IQ246, will complete its run with the 9th episode. He doesn't live in Japan and his wife is non-Japanese so he comes home and works in 2-4 dramas and then goes back home to live with his family. usually he'll shoot 2 dramas at a time because he likes to be home with his family but the man's got to work to support them.

Why are people so critical? Why not look him up? Why not use yahoo? I enjoy watching him in the Chinese and Japanese dramas though I am not a huge fan of his music I do like some of his songs. He is handsome, is a good actor, seems to be a very down-to-earth guy who enjoys his job, is very creative, and loves his family. There is nothing wrong about this or someone admiring him for it.

What's Yahoo?......I think it's something extinct or something barely extant...

What's Yahoo?......I think it's something extinct or something barely extant...

Yahoo.co.jp gets more unique visitors every month than any other site in Japan, at least on desktop. It's number 1. Hardly extinct.
