Ebizo Ichikawa, 38, a kabuki superstar, on Thursday urged people to unite and work together for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games despite the problems that may be faced.

Ebizo made the comments at the kickoff event “The Land of the Rising Sun” at Roppongi Hills on Thursday. He also performed a kabuki scene portraying the rise of Japan to its present day.

Ebizo’s wife and freelance announcer Mao Kobayashi, 34, is currently battling breast cancer, and working to raise awareness and encourage women to have cancer check-ups through her blog. Their daughter Reika, 5, and son Kangen Horikoshi, 3, watched from the audience seats as their father responded to the press.

Actor Ryohei Suzuki, 33, and theater director Amon Miyamoto, 58, also attended the event.

Not sure this guy is the best person to tell people to unite, given his reputation for getting in fights and telling them what to do. I'm also not at all sure what the Olympics have to do with his performance at Roppongi Hills this week, but hey... I guess at least some voices telling people to work together is good, hypocritical or not.

@smithinjapan Yeah but that was in the past, after he married he completely turned around. Have a little bit of sympathy for the guy, his wife is battling breast cancer and if im not mistaken also different parts of her body they discovered cancer. I hope she makes it, poor family.

My wife is a big fan of Ebizo. She brought me along to one of his talks and had me stand up and speak, knowing that the only gaijin in the room would stand out enough to be noticed and called on. It worked perfectly.

My wife hated this guy and also thinks its his bad "karma" that got sucked into Mao. But she kinds of respects him now seeing how hard he is working and blogging all the time since Mao got sick. He said something like it's his dream to date Mao on Christmas eve, so it's really not looking good for poor Mao.
