I recently got Amazon Prime here in the UK and was able to watch the final season of one of my favourite series, the Victorian crime drama "Ripper Street", which originally aired on the BBC. The production values of the Amazon-made series are equal to or perhaps better than the BBC original.
Clearly there is an audience for online or even downloaded offline content from Amazon. The only adverts are on the first episodes, and they are not restricted to slots dictated by advertisers. Running times are variable, meaning that when the BBC does air this final "Ripper Street" series it will be cut to ribbons to fit the one hour slot. Had it been on one of the commercial channels it would be hacked down to 45 minutes so that the adverts could fit in.
I think the likes of Amazon are the future for high quality drama.
