Hulu is worth the cheap subscription and I use it for studying Japanese a lot. They have The Walking Dead and Hannibal. Still no Game of Thrones though-- what a drag...If NetFlix get's that one, hmmmm....might have to do the dirty on Hulu and switch.

Will it be available on consoles?

Tried to find out what content they have but they don't seem to list it anywhere.... oh well, I guess that is how they get you to signup to their free intro :)

Signed up for a 1 month trial. I have to hook up the tablet to the TV and watch that way as my TV doesn't have Internet access. Subtitles doesn't transfer from tablet to TV but doesn't matter to me.

Not as much content as the U.S. one but maybe it is still new. Very few movie choices, just a lot of the classics. TV shows seem abundant and I look forward to finishing Prison Break which I haven't since Season 2. Good Stand Up Comedy which I was surprised to see here. Good documentaries too. A lot of kids programs as well. Of course a lot of Japanese dramas and movies. I look forward to more content.

Great for watching stuff that's already two years old....

"Still no Game of Thrones though" ummm..... don't hold you breath. Netflix does not equal HBO. Unless you have HBO or HBO Go you will never see Game of Thrones legally. There is a reason it is the number 1 most pirated show.

Netflix is awesome, if you don't need up to the minute TV shows.

As far as game of thrones, you can buy seasons for streaming on Amazon, I've done it from Japan without issue.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

You can sign up for better quality, works great on my Apple TV box, iPhone and iPad , slightly better quality than Hulu

I guess that SkyPerfect is going to be the first casualty.

I hope the content is good. The content of Japanese HULU is vastly inferior to that of American HULU.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Anyone know a streaming who give english subs for all content?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

its alright I guess, Wish they had The Walking Dead though.

I wonder if the pickup line "Netflix & Chill?" will work here...

Anyone got a list of the movies/tv shows they have at the moment? How does it compare to Hulu, or should i wait for Amazon later? Specifically looking for Simpsons, Family Guy, GoT, and semi-recent movies...

Finally Hulu has the walking dead back ! It took them over 3 years to air season 4 and now its season 5 episode 1 (used to air 1 day after the U.S but not now).

Im thinking of ditching hulu in favor of netflix because:

1) you can watch it on 2 screens at the sametime (cant do that on hulu). 2) after the buyout, it seems to be populated by Japanese dramas and movies (well I can understand that as we live in Japan) and the U.S dramas/movies seem not to be updated as much hence the walking dead - so many people complained on their facebook page.

So Can anyone who has both hulu and netflix tell me if its a good idea to keep both or cut hulu.

Already begun the 1 month free trial on Netflix.

Good thing about Hulu is that you can reactivate your account if you feel like it. But so far most of the context does not attract me.

Good thing I saw in Netflix already, Big Bang Theory, they are airing from season 1 to season 5 all the time, in Hulu for some reason one month they air the even seasons and the other month the odd seasons...

Neflix has some context I like (Daredevil for once) and the movies for the time being they seem to have a bit better selection than Hulu, but as someone said, at the moment they have far less selection on series and movies.

At this moment I don't see any support on Sony TVs for Netflix.. something that Hulu do have.

I suppose all depends on the context Hulu, Amazon and Netflix will offer... Skyperfect I will still use it, need Discovery, Natgeo, and BBC

BBC World is rubbish, in my opinion. It's just a never-ending repeat of World Business News, from what I see when I watch it in the hotel on holiday.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well is BBC or CNN.. and I prefer BBC.

It is information none the less... a way to compliment the sadly scarce international related news on Japanese TV

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Very interested in how this goes, but I'm a bit worried about International content being "edited" for the Japanese Netflix.

I can only go Yippppeeeeee!!!!

Netflix on Wednesday launched its service in Japan,

ould not live without it here in the U.S. Hope you folks there enjoy it as much.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Signed up. It seems far better than Hulu with a bigger catalog, however I'm seeing the same issues that Hulu was so poor for: not the latest seasons, etc. for TV shows. Homeland on Netflix is only up to season 2.. I do hope they increase the range in the coming weeks and months otherwise I may have to just stay on Popcorn Time..

@Segador I've never seen anything on netflix that didn't have English subs. And I've had it for more than a year.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Another bad thing about HULU is 90% of the documentaries are dubbed into Japanese rather than subtitled. All the National Geographic and Discovery Channel stuff. I can't understand why they don't put up the subtitled versions. That was a major disappointment for me when I signed up. I hope Netflix doesn't have this problem.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

does it have Japanese subtitles for all shows?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

seems their offerings are to be more limited than in the past, so they will not be carrying as much content from other vendors in order to focus on their own programming. still, you can`t beat the price for the first month...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I would be curious about the content, I assume it won't be as good as the US one (from the point of view of a native English speaker who is largely uninterested in Japanese content) but I want to know how limited it is.

I had a subscription to Hulu for about a year, but we cancelled it mainly based on content. The English movies were overwhelmingly in the "Late 90s Steven Segal Straight to VHS release" genre and you could go months without seeing something worthwhile popping up. The straw that really broke the camel's back with them though was when I tried to watch Starsky and Hutch (the Owen Wilson/Ben Stiller movie) and discovered they only had it dubbed into Japanese, which just felt like a totally gratuitous FU on their part so I pulled the plug shortly after that.

Hope Netflix will be better.....not sure though.

Yeah, I can't find out any answers to what I want to know. Can someone please help me?

What are the TV shows and movies offered?

and

Will they have English subs for the Japanese content and Japanese subs for the English content?

Nope

and Japanese subs for the English content?

Yes, they already have it.

Thanks to these steps http://bit.ly/1NpFGT0 , I can now access all Netflix regions including Japan using one Netflix account.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Thanks, @Upgrayedd!

Now after having seen what they offer, I know I won't be signing up.

It's just so much crap. The worst of American movies or TV dramas that were cancelled after one season so they don't have proper endings.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

The first month is free and you can cancel anytime so you can sign up and see for yourselves.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Has anyone running OSX 10.9.5 or later been able to view content using MS Silverlight, the Netflix default browser? MS doesn`t support Apple OS/apps, and vice-versa.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Signed up... The selection isn't great but it isn't TERRIBLE. I assume it will get better over time.

With a Netflix account and a VPN like tunnel bear you can watch any region's Netflix. My American account works just fine watching Japanese Netflix for no additional cost. The reverse is true too, so if you don't like the Japanese Netflix offerings just switch to US, Canada, Aus, UK etc with a VPN

User beware. Yes, a VPN can help you get across the region blocks. But understand that if Netflix catches you doing that, they will ban you from the service. They are against VPNs for legal reasons. I've used Netflix in other countries (that Netflix operates in) with my US account and it has always worked fine. The subtitles will be catered to the country you're in.

There are Japanese dubs/subs for English movies but Japanese movies don't have foreign language dubs/subs. I am disappoint.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@massiou81: What's the easiest way to change your Netflix region? Smart DNS, etc. or VPN? Wouldn't VPN have some pretty bad performance issues?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

VPN has given me no problems in Japan. It does slow down the connection, but with it being ultrafast here to begin with, it's never affected me. I use a paid VPN so maybe that's better than a free one

I agree. VPN is the way to go. That's what I have. Had Netflix for years, didn't like the content so much in Japan, but for the Japanese audience at least it's a far better alternative then what is presently on Japanese TV, I will admit that much, but I'll stick to the US version, but hopefully Netflix Japan will bring more shows and give the Japanese some very seriously needed content and alternative to what they watch on TV here, variety can be huge blessing.

Tried this last evening. The interface is much worse than Hulu - you can't search by country/language, you pay extra for HD and they don't even have Netflix shos like House of Cards.

Not worth your time.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Not worth your time.

That may be true of Japanese Netflix, but considering you can access Netflix in the USA Australia, Canada, UK, several other countries, all with the same account it's great

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Can I ask one more time just to be clear.....Do all these shows and movies have Japanese subtitles?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

There is a 1 month free trial, no obligations, so people with questions should just try it. You can even try VPN service for free too. Nothing to lose

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I took on the free trial last night, it doesn't seem any better than Hulu. I hadn't even heard of most of the shows. No House of Cards sucks too, Hulu only showed season 1 of that.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

SkyperfecTV has the rights to GoT in Japan apparently.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Personally I think that Hulu Japan has made some big strides recently. Last year I was getting pretty digusted with their catalog but they have been getting a lot better. They also have most of there programs in two forms sub titled version or dubbed version. There website and apps are also a lot easier to search and navigate. I have both and if you like original Netflix programming than it an easy decision. But I think that Hulu Japan now has a better and larger catalog. At least for now.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'm signing up regardless (definitely worth the trial period). Also been doing the VPN road for a long time, but for the price (and depending on the shows/movies available) - It may be worthy to keep both accounts active. Netflix has long filled a gap for me and my family, just as many of the Japanese Dramas made their way to US Rental shops in various Mitsuwa markets...
