Very, very rarely happens in our household. On the rare occassion it does I'll just say I'm out for a while. Return an hour later and all is well.

You mean there are times when we don't?

she gives me a sound thrashing and I see the light.

I scream, I stomp, and I shout. Then I say sorry, because I'm a guy and I'm not going to win that or any other battle.

The problem seems to be mostly a matter of proximity. The longer people stay together, the more they have to deal with each others quirks. However this isn't a bad thing because as people become closer and more comfortable over the years they're able to express themselves more openly. So a little negativity is a normal part of close relationships that include a lot of daily contact. After all humans are very adaptable creatures and the older they get the more likely they deal with conflicts by avoiding confrontation. In other words they're smart enough to realize that if their partner hasn't changed in ten or twenty years they probably aren't going to. So they might as well accept their partner as they are and deal with the annoyances because more often than not, the good really does outweigh the bad.

She goes upstairs, and I stay downstairs; make two cups of tea after an hour or so....all's well.

He never gets on my nerves (not yet, anyway). When I get on his, he fills up his water bottle, takes off on his bike and does a half-day round-trip up along by the river. He comes back armed with chocolate, coffee and/or a bottle of wine and apparently feels a lot better.

I take her upstairs and I beat her. No I don't, I go out.
