have your say
What would you like to hear Prime Minister Shinzo Abe say in his remarks when he visits the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor with U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday?

I'm sure he will say a lot of nice things, stopping short of an apology. At least I'm sure he won't stand inside the memorial and laugh, like the two Japanese old timers who were there when I visited years ago.

"I'm resigning as PM of Japan."

I find it hard to believe that any Japanese, young or old, would "laugh" at the USS Arizona memorial. I think you misunderstood what you saw.

Readers, please comment on what the question asks you.

Is laughing against the law? Those two so called Asian Japanese Speaking men could have been American. Actually, probably were American reminiscing about growing up in an internment camp and the good times they had there despite the racism and difficulties.

Nothing. The off-the-shelf sound bytes on peace are tired.

I am convinced that the prime minister will not find it obligatory to cacchinate while he's there

I'd like to hear him say how solemn this location is, and that it should be treated with respect and dignity

Abe should say "War is Hell!! Let's stop it!" Nobody benefits but the arms makers 1%.

Let him quote Lincoln. His words will work just as well at Pearl Harbor as they did at Gettysburg: "The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here."

"I will take this opportunity to recognize that Japan has limits. Therefore we will open our markets to all U.S. products, without tariffs."

Readers, could we please have some sensible answers?

Mistakes were made by both countries in the lead up and during the war. Let's not make more of the same?

Not necessarily an apology but I think it would be good to recognise clearly that Japan was led in the wrong direction by a military-dominated government which brought about tremendous damage to many other countries and most of all to Japan itself. And that this will never be allowed to happen again.

From San Diego, California. My uncle died on the Arizona. I one question for both the Prime Minister and the President. "Sir, why did this take so long?"

I want him to say the Pearl Harbor attack was a huuuuuge mistake ultimitely resulting in Tokyo being firebombed and Hiroshima and Nagasaki being atomic bombed, and pledge to never repeat such a mistake.
