And those of us who are non-smokers, and get that second-hand smoke !

How can people with "significant shortness of breath" be "undiagnosed"?

Not particularly"significant", obviously.

I can understand those who started smoking decades ago - they were probably not aware of the dangers. But there is NO excuse now - any idiot knows the harmful effects. If you choose to subject yourself to this dirty habit and are not willing to give up, then you really need to pay for your treatment with your own money.

+1 to what Pukey2 said. I'll add that smokers need to be more heavily taxed. Their addiction affects others too.

Smokers should be heavily taxed! The cost of cigarettes are cheap compared to other countries. Japanese health insurance would save tons of money. Japanese government owns Japan Tobacco company. lol Go figure.

Also undiagnosed terminal selfishness and advanced imbecility.

How many innocent bystanders, including children, have suffered illness or death as a result of the filthy habit of those who "smoked at least a pack of cigarettes a day for 10 years"?

A smoker I knew would sometimes tell me, "Well, you have to die some way!"

She died of stroke and coronary disease at age 56.

they say a smoker of averge weight who smoke a pack a day, the stresses on there bodies is equivalent of a non smoker who is 30~40kg overweight

I can't understand an industry that disregards the suffering and death of its customers. Smoking killed my father, who started smoking at 11, and most of my uncles, including one who quit 20 years before he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Try to understand why governments who complain about the rising costs of medical care, those same governments that collectively lose their minds when a car company makes some error in production that ends up BY ACCIDENT killing 10 or so people goes on the war path to put an end to that but meanwhile lets other companies sell a product that is known to slowly and painfully kill its users and non users around them, to continue selling that product for decades after it was determined to kill... That is insanity and yet we all know it is but just shrug our shoulders. Turn to the side and cough please, that's a rough cough you have there...

All Indian and gambling casinos allow smoking. Even though many of these casinos are located in the reservations with rights, the people that get lung cancer has to be paid by the U.S. taxpayers. Maybe it's time to ban smoking at all casinos, Including Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

Cigarettes are the only consumer products that kill you when used as directed. Cigarette manufacturing is the only industry that knowingly kills its customers. They can do this because, as PJ Barnum said, there's a sucker born every minute. The unfortunate thing about cigarette suckers is that they also blow.

Elizabeth Regan, lead author and assistant professor of medicine at National Jewish Health.

She works for Dr. Jett leading professor at National Jewish Health in Denver. This group has been receiving US federal grants and advocating Stop Smoking cmpaign nationwide. It is very regrettable that Japanese government is not actively advocating this campaign at all. We need to educate public to stop smoking.. Japan needs to offer more Low Dose CT scans for screening at low cost. There is ONLY one low dose Ct scan available in Tokyo. Can you believe it? Japan is supposed to be a rich country. Why do you want to spend too much money on Olympic Center? Money is spent on wrong things.
