Magazine asks women if they’d rather date an ugly millionaire or unemployed hottie

By RocketNews24

Japan’s got an unabashed soft spot for beautiful people, with attractive models and celebrities used to promote everything from fashion lines to insurance packages. At the same time, the country also has a deep respect for financial stability and economic vigor.

Recently, fashion magazine AneCan pitted these two cultural values against each other by asking readers which guy they’d rather date, an ugly dude who’s flush with cash, or a hottie who doesn’t have a job?

The results of the survey of 1,000 women appears in the March edition of the magazine, published by Shogakukan. This issue marks the debut of a new regular column, titled "Which Would You Choose?"

For the very first question, AneCan asked its readers whether they’d rather have an ugly man with an annual income of 300 million yen or a handsome man who’s unemployed as their boyfriend. Specifically, the unattractive man was referred to as "busaiku," a term that usually denotes an unattractive face more so than an unappealing physique.

We’re guessing the aim of the "Which Would You Choose?" column is to present readers with a tough choice where both options have comparatively significant pros and cons. Since this is the first installment, though, it looks like they’re still ironing out some kinks in the topic selection system, because when the votes were tallied for these two theoretical beaus, the contest wasn’t close at all.

As shown in the pink section of the graph, 75.5% of respondents picked the financially successful yet visually unimpressive man as the more eligible bachelor. On the other side of the equation, just under a quarter of the women would apparently be happy to pay for dinner, as long as they could look at their boyfriend’s gorgeous face while they eat it.

While AneCan’s editors were probably expecting a more even split, online commenters were anything but surprised.

“It’s what on the inside that counts.” “What’s on the inside = money!” “Picking the rich one is obvious.” “In the end, money is all that matters.” “Yup, a guy better have money!” “So it’s not the man, but his money that’s popular.” “I’m a guy, but I’d make the same choice if they were women.”

It’s worth noting that the Ane portion of the publication’s name means “big sister,” and the magazine’s target demographic is women in their late 20s and early 30s. This puts them at an age when they’re no longer living off Mom and Dad. Facing the realities of establishing their own household no doubt has them conscious of the way their romantic partner’s earning potential is going to affect their own lifestyle.

The result might have been very different had the survey been done by AneCan’s sister publication CanCam, whose readership skews younger by several years. AneCan’s readers, though, are likely to be a little more practical and mature. Or, in the case of this survey respondent, cunning:

“I’d use the rich one like an ATM and fool around behind his back with the unemployed guy.”

Hey, the question clearly states that you’re supposed to pick one of the two guys. Using one to secretly bankroll your fling with the other is cheating, in more ways than one.

I think 300 million yen (3 million dollars) makes it a bit too easy to choose.

Lower it to something like 1 million yen (100 thousand dollars) and you'd get more head scratching.

10 ( +16 / -6 )

Only if real choices were that simple. One very appealing adjective is that is not mentioned here is sense of humor, both for male and female. A great laugh or a sweet smile of someone you love will make your day, every time. Back to the topic in question... I am glad with the result since I am not an Adonis and getting rich is something I can still dream of.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Not fair!

What about us unfortunate-looking poor guys?

15 ( +17 / -2 )

They should say an average looking guy that makes less than you but loves you immensely vs. a handsome millionaire that's abusive. I think that's more realistic, right?

6 ( +9 / -3 )

“I’d use the rich one like an ATM and fool around behind his back with the unemployed guy.” Is probably the most JAPANESE answer of them all... lol..

18 ( +18 / -0 )

Why report about such a lame and unsophisticated survey?

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Lower it to something like 1 million yen (100 thousand dollars) and you'd get more head scratching.

The head scratching would probably be done by economists wondering how on earth the yen has appreciated so much ;-)

20 ( +20 / -0 )

lubracasi:

" Not fair! What about us unfortunate-looking poor guys? "

We are screwed.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

@Willi

But not as often as we'd like... : )

11 ( +12 / -1 )

it's all about the money ;-) especially in Japan where majority of the women rely on men, the numbers of gold diggers here are stagerring, majority of Japanese women would just like to be pretty, eat gourmet food and shop... they want to be more of a possesion than a mother. That's why all of those women activists in USA willnever succeed here...

11 ( +11 / -0 )

The results of this survey don't really surprise me, having lived here for a decade.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

I do not know any girls that are gold diggers.

-13 ( +3 / -16 )

I think J-women are one of the most attractive girls in the planet, however majority of women here rely on men.. the problem is financial status is not always stable, a guy can be the Shacho of a company now and the next day he could get bankrupt and become broke. Or he can be hit by a truck and become paralyzed.... And I don't think many of these Japanese women can go on and carry on the torch for their partners...many of them will jump out of the boat and look for another wealthy man

That's why the numbers of adultery here is very high. Because many thought that money is the solution for satisfying lives....after marrying their wealthy workaholic husbands and got used to wealthy life years gone by they become bored and go back sleeping with their ex higschool boyfriends etc.

I say marry the person you LOVE (rich or poor)

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I wonder if they ran a survey to men on which would you want; a rich older woman (45 and up) or a pretty young girl who has no money. I am sure that the results would be the same for the men.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

“I’d use the rich one like an ATM and fool around behind his back with the unemployed guy.”

If I were unemployed, I'd fool around with the ATM and use her on her back.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Lower it to something like 1 million yen (100 thousand dollars) and you'd get more head scratching.

Oh if only 1 million yen was worth 100K dollars....

6 ( +7 / -1 )

They should have added a few rules or caveats to make it more interesting.

For example...

If you marry the rich guy, you have to have sex with him every week forever... no turning off the sex tap after a few months as you are secretly planning to...

If you marry the rich guy, you can't give up your job and even if you have kids you can't become a sengyou-shufu indefinitely, you have to go back to work at some point.

etc.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

There's no such thing as an unemployed hottie to the vast majority of women. A woman could still be appealing to a man without a job or money but the rules of attraction simply don't function like that the other way round.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

The ugly rich douchebags are more than welcome to all the idiotic clingon gold diggers!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Why am I entirely unsurprised about the results? 300 million yen a year? Yeah, I'd marry the ugly bugger too.

Make it a true contest though: Cut the rich guy's annual salary by 75%, and give the good looking fellow a modest income.

Then ask the question a second time, but add or subtract love from the equation for either or of the fellows.

Now THOSE would be results worth reading about.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Quite simple, really. Date both. Who says you gotta choose one over the other or be monogamous? Have dinner with the rich dude at fancy French place, then feign a headache and head over to the hottie's for a nightcap to relieve yourself of the headache.

and then foreigners say japanese women are the best... lol women are women regarless of nationality. When it comes to reality a lot of japanese girls are materialic (like many other in the west) and few care about their men as a man who needs not only sex but emotional support and someone to be there in the good times and the bad ones. There are some sweet good girls but you have to be lucky to find one because most are shy and uninterested to approach a foreigner. I am japanese and sometimes I feel sorry to see how some japanese girls fool men and foreigners. Japanese are good at pretending anything you can imagine. So it is scary. Even some japanese wives are scary, there are a lot of weird stuff going on that the husband doesnt know, but most think it is acceptable because their men are not home anyway and they think he is probably doing the same thing so why not. At the end the relationship is meaningless but they keep pretending everything is ¨happy¨. I personally admire how westerners at least try to make an effort to have a real relationship and connect with their significant other in different degrees. In japan a lot of things are based on money and superficiality even marriage. So the result of this survey shouldnt be news because it has been like that in japan for a long time already. Anyway, I love my country but I think people should be aware and stop fantazising about japan. Sometimes foreigners have too much energy about japan and sometimes it becomes annoying. Good luck!

21 ( +23 / -2 )

one thing of note, its a statistical fact that rich men on average cheat on there parntners than say an average wage guy. so while catching a rich man may seem good for the majority of women, youll more than likely have to share him with other women.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Awesome post PamiMame. It is surprising to see a Japanese woman admit what most of us with brains in our heads figured out a long time ago. Pity the fools who are still at the stage of worshiping Japanese women as if they were the pinnacle of female creation. My divorced friends, separated friends, and half of my married non-separated friends here in Japan would certainly not share the view of these fools.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

@PamiMame, love your honesty.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

would be turned off by such shallow women

I'm guessing you really don't know Japanese men very well....

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Before getting too worked up, remember this:

What women say they want in a man, they really want in a man, and what they finally choose in a man are 3 entirely different things.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

not surprising at all. typical shallow women only care about cash money. actually the one surprising thing is that it wasn't closer to 100% for the ugly guy.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

The day I take notice of a magazine survey to distinguish loves lost dream is the day I eat my shoe, and bark at my handbag.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

A better and more realistic question would be low paid worker with kind personality vs richer guy who is a sociopath. It was too easy to discount the good looking guy and too easy to accept the rich guy.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

PamiPame; Thank you for your honest post. I'm sure it is easy for a Japanese woman to fool most men, including most foreign men who might be slightly more sensitive to phony presentations. There's something about the law of attraction where such not-so-good women will be found attractive by many not-so-good aware guys. I hope your situation is a good one. It seems that you will be found or have been found by one of the 'good' guys. Thank you again for your post. An American guy who has been married for quite a long time to a 'good' Japanese lady.

name means “big sister,” and the magazine’s target demographic is women in their late 20s and early 30s. This puts them at an age when they’re no longer living off Mom and Dad.

Most of them may have jobs but what percentage actually pay room and board to their parents? As long as they are at home, they are living off of their mom and dad.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

What if like me, you're super hot and make that amount of money ?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

In agreement with warispeace as this takes being shallow to another level. Also agree with the majority that the question in itself does not reflect the real world or real life.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

In sunny CA, gals usually make as much $$ as their men- if not more or in some caes WAY MORE. + there's a SMORGASBORD of hot women, cool guys (all nationalities) to factor into the equation. . . . . . If Japan was similar, the results of the above survey would be more interesting & varied.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Really tough question for a lot of women to answer here.....let me think ?? New toys from the rich boy or fork out for dinner ? Hmmm...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Very good post, PamiPame. Thanks for coming on here and telling it like it is. I agree with everything you said, and actually have had the very same conversation with many Japanese women over the years I have lived in Japan. It is pretty obvious really, and I can't see how a place like Japan would breed any other kind of women. The only women I know from Japan who don't display these characteristics are the ones who feel disenfranchised by the system, and exist on the outskirts. A lot of these often speak English pretty well, as they have studied it as a means to escape the reality of their nationality.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

The rich guy could well lose all his money in a financial crash or due to poor financial management. The hottie will be old, grey and wrinkled one day.

The first is a possibility. The second is a certainty.

Better to base the choice on something not so ephemeral as either cash or looks.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

cleo: The hottie will be old, grey and wrinkled one day.

Old, grey, wrinkled, and rich off the palimony payout.

And full circle, now it's the boy toys who'll have to decide if it's worth it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@PamiPame, your response is far more interesting that this article.

But most women want a man who is either rich or marry a man that is handsome. Sadly, most of the women taking part in the survey will never have to worry about either one :)

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Well.. I don't think it's endemic in Japan not because I know much about the Japanese's view of it, but because I think the survey would be about the same here in NA. If it's not I would tend to say that it would be because the girls would be hypocrite. Happily for us like me that aren't handsome or rich we can date someone of our ''level'' haha.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

There should've been another option "marry the rich guy, never have sex with him but meet the unemployed hottie on the side and pay for it with the rich husbands money"... would've been more popular with the 75% crowd i am sure.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yeah, those who see wealth above love are going to get what they work for. In my country, instead of women expecting a sugar-daddy, they look into making themselves wealthy. 2 people that make an equal amount of income are much stronger together than one person with no income leeching off the person with a lot of money.

While this "survey" is still just considered a gossip thing, the perspective that the woman(or man) expects the to be able to spend the rich person's money is severe delusion. Many smart rich guys are rich because they don't let the women have unlimited access to their funds.

Even if I was rich, I wouldn't want to marry a woman that sat on her butt all day spending all the cash that I worked for. She'd better get out there and earn her own money and show that she herself is fiscally responsible and capable of taking care of herself. Because there is never any guarantee that anyone will keep the wealth they have for the rest of their lives.

One of my co-workers is a young woman with a child, she left the father and stated that making herself reliant soley on his income was the biggest mistake ever. She now is trying to buy her own house with her own money so she'll never be stuck in a situation where she doesn't have control of her environment or finances.

What position would anyone rather be in a relationship. Getting kicked out of someone elses house, or kicking someone out of your own house during an argument?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

"Use the rich man like a ATM.".....Oh, man...

2 ( +2 / -0 )

An utterly disappointing result, and not at all surprising, which is also utterly disappointing. Neither looks nor money should be any kind of a factor in relationships. Being so shallow as to focus on looks makes you look like a.... well a disreputable woman. That's about as politely as I can put it. And if any girl tried to use me as an ATM, I'd send her packing in an instant. I work hard for my money, I'm not about to let a woman snatch it away from me for no good reason. I don't mind treating a girl on special occasions, or if I'm in a particularly good mood, but if she's constantly demanding X amount of money, or requesting that I buy her this, that and the other, that's just gold digging. Ain't nobody got time for that.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

HonestDictator... thanks for the laugh! I love your comment! I think there is too much princess thinking that they won't work and find a man who will do all the work and bring the money. The reality is when you're riche you like to have a wife who is doing something of her life.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Honestdictator

AMEN!

I don't think true relationship with full of love is established under any of these circumstances. That's why women who choose their man by one of them indicated in the article would have another guy.

I am really annoyed with any relationship survey conducted by Japanese media because they never consider nature of love or personality!

If I can date a beautiful western woman, it would be great; however I will consider her personality and appreciate her for my imperfect English skills (I am Japanese).

0 ( +1 / -1 )

You can't help being ugly or a hottie.

Nobody ever watched Beauty and the Beast?

@PamiMame

Very nice post. I have never met any Japanese like the fake ones that are in it for their own wants and needs, but have met many like that in America.

Have met some mean men like that in America too, but not really here. A few.

Men are visually aimed. Women aim for finding someone that can take care of their needs so they can take care of the family...but here, without having to work.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Some people are so poor all they have is money.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@Kobe

Nice sentiment. Original, or are you quoting someone?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Are those women for Real? Too many Fairy tales movies...

Why would a Rich guy will get into a marriage with a Gold Digger ?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@B-El

"Why would a rich guy get into a relationship with a gold-digger?"

Breasts?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

PamiPame, your post is very insightful and sounds like what my Japanese husband often said--Japanese women are "scary" because he could never know what they were really like.

Growing up he became very disillusioned with marriage and family based on what he saw around him, went abroad and found hope, and me...haha. We have similar views of how love is the base of marriage. I think you're not alone and many Japanese young people are dissatisfied with the expectations of married life in their culture.

That said, those who complain about gold-diggers have no idea what it's like to be married to a working Japanese man. You will rarely see him. He will come home very late and drunk, only enough time to shower and sleep 4 hours, most week nights. He is no position to contribute anything to child-rearing and the household in general, besides money.

If you can reasonably expect to have to raise your kids like a single mom, why wouldn't a woman choose a situation in which she didn't have to work full-time?

This survey reflects a sad cynical attitude many women have, but women are only one half of the equation.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Great post PamiPam!

You hit the nail on the head,It is hard to find the good apple among the bad ones, I am lucky to be married with a good Japanese woman. I wouldnt care if she was white black or blue, as long as they truly love you

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Japanese wives aren't scary.

They may be a lot of things but 'scary' isn't one of them.

Just give back to them whatever you get...

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Most girls dont like hot guys, and theyd pick someone else over a hot guy even if he didnt have moeny
