Tokyo’s 'bookstore hotel' adds a bar for travelers who love reading and drinking

Some would assert that the most comfortable way to fall asleep is by doing a little light reading after you lay your head down on the pillow. Others would say that their method of choice is drinking a relaxing nightcap before crawling into bed.

Whichever side of the debate you’re on, Book and Bed Tokyo, the bookstore-themed hotel located in the city’s Ikebukuro neighborhood, is happy to accommodate you. Even though the hotel only opened in late 2015, it’s currently putting the finishing touches on a round of renovations that will add a bar to the premises.

Scheduled to reopen this weekend, Book and Bed Tokyo is renaming itself Book and Bed and Bar Tokyo. Guests of the chain’s second location, in Kyoto, have been able to enjoy craft beers since November of 2016, and while the Tokyo branch is yet to reveal its menu, we do know that alcoholic beverages will be sold in its new bar space.

The new amenity is sure to be a hit with the hotel’s youthful, worldly customer base (85% of guests are under the age of 40, and roughly one in three is foreign-born). And just so Tokyoites and travelers who’ve already secured lodging elsewhere don’t feel left out, Book and Bed and Bar Tokyo will also be offering day-use plans, starting at 500 yen per hour and topping out at 1,500 yen for a block of time from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Book and Bed and Bar Tokyo’s grand reopening is on Saturday.
