Police on Monday said that a 13-year-old girl who went missing after leaving her home in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, on June 24, has turned up at a police station in Koriyama.
According to police, Mana Sato entered the police station at around 2 p.m. Monday and was taken into protective custody. Police said she was not injured in any way. No details have been released as to where the girl was for the past four weeks.
Sato was last seen by her mother as she left for school. A short time later, her mother received a call from the school saying that her daughter had not shown up, Fuji TV reported.
Police said it appeared that Sato had gone to, or was taken to Tokyo, after the location of her cell phone was tracked to Tokyo between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on the day of her disappearance. The phone was found later that day in a toilet bowl in a bookstore near Tokyo Station.

Sounds like a runaway. Probably had someone she knew via social media who was willing to take her away (to Tokyo) and eventually she realized the life was undesirable and not what she dreamed of. In any case, she's safe, and unharmed. The reasons for what she did can be dealt with in the family. If it were kidnapping we would have heard more by now.

Chances are that she is a victim of child abuse. I think her privacy is important now that she was found.

Probably just means that the police took charge of her until her parents could be contacted and to ask her where she had been, just to make sure she doesn't disappear again. After a quick search, it seems to be the modus operandi when a missing or abducted kid is found, in Japan and around the world.
