100 nautical miles (185 Km) north of the Senkaku is not exactly "near" the disputed islands.

Pretty low when even reporting about some poor people's deaths some media outlets need to drop in their little nations tic comments about the disputed islands. Seriously what's more important the 3 dead or Japan's argument with china over these rocks.... Don't answer that its Japan l already know what the answer will be...

When talking about the tens of millions of square miles that make up the Pacific Ocean a hundred or so is certainly close for the purpose of editors?

In terms of navigating open ocean, 100nm is "near". In terms of driving an automobile, 100nm would be "far".

Eh... the comment was to clarify the location of the islands because different countries call them different names. AFP has to present both names when reporting in order for ALL their customers to know what islands are being discussed. Methinks you're overly sensitive on the issue... just a tad.

The JCG just like any country's coat guard has the primary mission of providing assistance and search & rescue, a task that is hindered by China's continuous acts of aggression and harassment over Japanese islands they claim to be theirs yet refuse to take the matter to the ICJ. And Fadamor is bang on, 100 NM is quite "near" in nautical terms. And could all the regular J-bashers at least make an effort to present an argument that adds to the discussion and not simply asinine?

I am not convinced 100 NM is near. 100 NM South East of the Senkaku islands, and you are almost in Taipei. 100NM East of the Senkaku, and you're closer to Okinawa.

All true, but the boat was found 100nm NORTH of Uotsuri, which means the two land masses you mentioned aren't even REMOTELY as close to the boat as Uotsuri. Trust me as an ex-sailor - 100nm is "near" when you're talking open ocean.

Actually, not true now that I've looked at it on Google Earth. 100nm West SouthWEST of Uotsuri would actually put you on dry land in Taiwan. It's about 230nm to the island of Okinawa, so heading 100nm in that direction would still put Uotsuri closer.

=there is nothing else out there. With GPS on boats now, -I would say 10 meters is near. Someone must still be using a astrolabe.

This is an example of how Japan should build a JCG outpost on the Senkakus for the purpose of providing fast assistance to vessels of all nationalities in the area. This would naturally include Chinese and Taiwanese fishing vessels. What's China going to do? Bomb it?
