Two men and a woman in their 70s and 80s were killed Friday when the small car they were traveling in collided head-on with a truck on an expressway in Yurihonjo, Akita Prefecture.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 4 a.m. on the Nihonkai-Engan Tohoku Expressway. The three people in the car suffered extensive injuries and were taken to hospital where they were confirmed dead, Fuji TV reported. Police identified them as Takeji Sasaki, 76, who was driving the car, Kyoetsu Ito, 82, and his wife Katsu, 79.
The 48-year-old truck driver was uninjured. He was quoted by police as saying he saw the car coming toward him and tried to swerve out of the way but was unable to avoid the collision.
Police believe Sasaki drove the wrong way when he entered the expressway at Ouchi Junction.

How is this possible? For one, expressways have toll gates, so how'd he get through those?
DaDude
Some exits don't have toll gates as the toll gates are in the middle of the highway before exiting. So he must have gone in on one of those.
