Four young men and women were killed Saturday morning when their car crashed head-on into a 10-ton truck in Saitama.

According to police, the accident occurred at around 12:30 a.m. on National Route 122 in Iwatesuki Ward, Saitama. NTV reported that the truck driver told police the car crossed the center line and smashed into him head-on.

The four passengers in the car -- aged 19 and 20 -- were taken to hospital with severe injuries but were pronounced dead upon arrival, police said. The truck driver was not injured.

Police said it was raining heavily at the time and visibility was poor.

Guaranteed the passengers in the back seat were not wearing seatbelts.

tmarie it was raining nothing was mentioned about "seat belts in the article take it for what was reported and think logically that anyone driving in a car biting a 10 ton truck head on the chances of survival is zero seat belt or no seat belt if you want and other want to speculate.

The reckless way truck drivers drive in saitama I hope this is investigated well and not just closed as youngsters being to blame. It may well be the youngsters fault but I really have serious doubts about the mentality or the ability to follow the speed regs of truck drivers as many just tailgate, massively overspeed and often drive too close to the centre line. Even on rainy days which makes it even more dangerous for other drivers.

I very much doubt it was the truck driver's fault in any way, especially given the car crossed the centre line. Look at the age of the people- 19 and 20. I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that the driver was going much too fast for the conditions, and that alcohol was possibly involved, as well as one or more of them not wearing seat belts- it's a classic scenario that the police see all the time. My family was affected by a very similar tragic accident- drivers at that age too often think they are infallible and immortal.

Sounds like driver fatigue. Maybe the other three were already asleep and the driver nodded off too. Can happen easily if tired.

Hence the question mark - but let's be honest, knowing seltbelt usage here, a very high possibilty that seatbelts weren't used. Plenty of cars hit 10 ton trucks head on with deaths resulting.
