Cyclist in his 70s killed by train on crossing

Police said Thursday that a man in his 70s, who was riding a bicycle, died after he was hit by a train on a crossing in Yokohama.

According to police, the accident occurred at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at a crossing on the Keikyu Line in Kanagawa Ward. There are four tracks covering a width of 18 meters at the crossing.

TBS quoted witnesses as saying the cyclist was on the tracks when the crossing gate came down. A woman in her 60s tried to lift the gate but was too late. The cyclist tried to get out of the way of the approaching train but it struck the back of his bike.

Police said the man was pronounced dead at the scene after having suffered severe head injuries.
