But, Prime Minister Abe said, "It is under control!" I guess his understanding of this word is much different to the rest of the world.

I'm sure its a simple language barrier. Under control, out of control. Same thing right?

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Who is behind these malicious reports? Must be a huge conspiracy to damage Japan's image.

6 ( +11 / -5 )

What they meant to assure you, was that the leaky flow of toxic information is completely under control.

3 ( +6 / -4 )

Many of the tanks were used to cool molten reactors wrecked by an earthquake and tsunami disaster in March 2011.

Could also read - Many of the tanks were used to cool molten reactors wrecked by an apathetic, slack, negligent operator called Tepco who are resposnible for the nuclear meltdown disaster in March 2011.

What was it Abe was saying about everything being completely under control?

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Abe has the IOC fooled but not us! It is NOT under control!

Maybe he's being positive and hoping it will be in control in 7 years. If it's not, he'll be out of office and won't be responsible to fix the issue. I feel sorry for the next PM...

Looks like they've created some loop: Pump contaminated groundwater to leaky tanks.

Too bad it's not a closed loop. Sometimes I wonder why they even pretend to try anymore.

Abe: "Completely under control"..... get serious!?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Not CAN cause cancer but DOES cause cancer.

Timing of this report is interesting. Just two days after the decission for Tokyo 2020. I wonder if they knew it earlier or not.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

oh !!!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I wondered when Abe on Saturday assured the IOC and the world that 'everything was under control', whether he knew something the rest of us didn't. Well, I guess not.

Funny how I got +4 for my comment on: Once-reluctant Japanese get behind Tokyo's Olympic bid

-1 for my comment on: Olympic bid a high-stakes gamble for Abe, Abenomics

and now -6 for my comment on: Erdogan says Istanbul rejection as 2020 host was unfair

but they're ALL the same comment ! Only the wording has been slightly changed ! My point is NOTHING is under control and Abe knows that ! There is a REAL risk over here !

4 ( +6 / -2 )

but they're ALL the same comment

Perhaps that is the problem. Maybe six people are suggesting that they got it the first time.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

ABE "So, what should I do? I mean there's radiation leaking everywhere like water through a sieve."

"Just tell them it's all under control."

ABE "Is it?"

"Who cares? They won't know the difference. And in any case, it'll take their mind off the TPP negotiations."

ABE "That's a point!"

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Wow! I didn't see that coming. But my question is when is the government going to take serious steps to try and contain the Fukushima radiation leaks. OK, so it's in the water.... Now the government should throw everyone who has a degree in any field that is every remotely close to anything dealing with radiation and make a think tank. Their job would be to try everything they can think of to solve this problem.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Mmmm ... hey people ... don't bother Abe right now. He's basking in the limelight of winning the Olympics. Rest assured, there's nothing happening up there in Fukushima ... he said so himself.

Mmmm, on the other hand ... maybe that limelight is actually the glow from all that radiated water that is leaking all over the place at the destroyed nuclear power plant.

If he wants to show us ... and the world ... that everything is "under control" at the throbbing plant ... why doesn't he go up there, walk among the ruins and prove to us that it's really safe?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Mmmm, will it be a 10,000 or 20000 year frozen barrier? What happens when it melts?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

YongYang,

Not CAN cause cancer but DOES cause cancer.

Depends on the dose. Same as all carcinogens.

@slumdog

but they're ALL the same comment

Well at least they're not EXACTLY the same - like some other people who just copy and paste the same comment in different places.

Was it the fact that I mentioned that my dog died of cancer that put six people off ? (That was only mentioned once...)

There is nothing under the control in those leaks. Abe knows it as we speak here.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

You are not in control if you are finding new information and new problems daily.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

In WW2 they came up with an acronym for this kind of situation and it meant normal. SNAFU.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

gogogo,

You are not in control if you are finding new information and new problems daily.

That depends on the scale of the problems. We have no hard figures for strontium in the groundwater, just that some is there, and the data from the sea, as reported by the NRA is that all the radionuclides checked for are below the detection limit, sample from 2km out.

http://radioactivity.nsr.go.jp/en/contents/8000/7292/24/278_r_0910.pdf

And to take a flip-side view of your statement, they are looking for problems and releasing new information. That at least is improving control.

You gotta love it! Radiation levels that even TEPCO has admitted will kill a person in four hours of exposure are 'potentially hazardous'. But hey, all charges against the company have been dropped, so they must be right.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Star-viking

It's useless for the fear mongerers can only focus on the headlines while your link clearly indicates the contamination levels in the sea is "ND" (Not Detectable). In other words, if we were to desalinate these sea water samples, it's well within the limits of drinking water.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Zzzzzzzz. Just admit TEPCO is a massive fail. Save the news please.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

This news conveniently after the Olympics were granted to Tokyo. Sneaky weasels.

Don't forget TEPC were criticised ny the NRA for inaccurate reporting:

http://www.japantoday.com/smartphone/view/national/nra-says-fukushima-water-leak-risk-exaggerated

TEPCO has confirmed that a reading of 2,200 millisieverts per hour would be enough to kill a person in a matter of hours.

But experts point out that this reading is taken very close to the source of the radiation. It drops dramatically—to 40 millisieverts per hour—just 50 centimeters away.

And the kind of radiation being emitted is very low energy, which means it is not able to penetrate the body easily.

That means while the dose could be fatal to a naked person immersed in the toxic liquid, it would do little to a worker wearing even rudimentary protection at a normal distance.

The take-away point: don't roll in water leaks at nuclear plants in the nude.

We need a worldwide consortium made up of experts in the field to start brainstorming solutions to what is happening in Fukushima and what can be done to FIX it. We need them NOW. Each country will also need to commit funds to this effort, since it is and will continue to affect the entire planet. The consequences could be the extinction of all life on earth. It is past time to do this. Japan is calling for help and they can not handle it alone.

How?
