Hong Kong residents dislike mainland Chinese more than Japanese: poll

That might have something to do with Mainland Chinese telling them, as I write this, what to do instead of the Japanese. Overlords here and now vs. what happened 70 years ago? I know who I'd dislike more.

Hong Kongers weren't exactly treated as equals during much of the colonial days either, I can tell you. You can ask some of the older folks. And you'd be surprised that Cantonese, the language spoken by the vast majority of HKers and the language which most mainland Chinese who fled there adopted, had no official status until 1974 (and only after demonstrations and petitions).

The reason why HKers are able to get along with Japanese visitors and expats there (it's great for Japanese women who actually want to further their careers as opposed to just pouring cups of tea), is that most can actually distinguish between individual people and their government. I know many HKs who get on very well with Japanese and love visiting Japan, but they also know about the brainwashing that occurs in the Japanese schools. If, god forbid, war did break out between China an Japan, I'm not so sure there'd be any HKers who would support Japan. The older generation still remember what happened. And those who know a bit about politics share a big dislike of Japanese politicians, especially the LDP.

I remembered standing in line at a ride in Hong Kong Disneyland. One Chinese mainlander and his lady were wiggling their way to the front of the line acting. The Hong Kong guy in front of me screamed out at him and told me how much he hated Chinese people and most Hong Kong people felt the same as him.

a) I agree (some) Hong Kong Chinese were treated second class citizens. But they were not brainwashed systematically. Were they told who to hate by the British? Or they were told they were better than anybody else by the British? Perhaps that surrounding areas were really HK territory? This comparison makes no sense.

I'm sure they are subject to a lot more propaganda now but I'm guessing the average HK citizen is not that gullible. The ones I've met are anything but.

You think JT is Japanese owned? If you clicked on the headline it obviously is news worthy. So much so that you had to comment. I think the rising anti=Japanese Govt sentiment is a worry for JPN.

HK people think they are half British, therefore better than other Asians. Too bad Britain refused to give them UK passports when they asked. Now they have an identity problem.

Funny, in HK you can get food products ingredients of which are only writen in Japanese or other language, I can't accept this for Japan. Imagine our people buying something from a shop that does not indicate what the ingredients is in our own language.... hehehehe

The "hatred" (dislike) of people is not borne out of ethnic difference, but by their actions and their politics... The poll just illustrates how people feel, in hard numbers. Don't shoot the messenger.

If poll results like this would help bring the mainland nutters to their senses, then I'm all for it, but you may be right to the extent that the nutters probably won't think twice as a result..

Another truth is more than 90% chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, hongkong residents have very negative feeling to Japan. Also most russians dislike Japanese too. **Japanese' friends, Americans, at least 50% hate Japanese. Believe me or not? Check it out.

I shudder to think how HK would be now had the Japanese army stayed. I've heard terrible stories from people who experienced what it was like there during the war. HK, or at least the New Territories, was always destined to go back to China. The British, like all other Europeans and Japanese, had no right going to places half way round the world and ruling over inferior natives. Whether they say so or not, Hongkongers ARE Chinese. Communism may go, but the Chinese culture and identity won't.

Please, just stop trying to stir up more hatred. Most of your posts (not just you, but also hard-core Japanophiles and Elbuda mexico) rely on this on-going Sinophobia. It's not always so black and white. But you seem to think, China bad, Japan good.

The problem in HK is more to do with the sheer number of visitors from the mainland. You may not believe it, but you get rude people of all nationalities. I've met really nice people from mainland China. It's just that the bad ones leave a lasting, nasty impression. You're just letting these people fuel your own hatred and racism. So, instead of gloating at this piece of news, perhaps you can offer some suggestions as to how HK can benefit from mainland Chinese money AND deal with the problem of bad behavior from some visitors.

Yes, very revealing. As I said before, most HKers can distinguish between individual people and their governments. I have no problem with most Japanese people I meet - they're fine people in general. But I despise the Japanese government, ie LDP.

Not sure, but many HKers seem to be in awe of white people, just like how the Japanese put whites right at the top of the hierarchy ladder. I just can't seem to understand why every HKer seems to have an English name. But they've been brainwashed into thinking that an education in English is worth more than one in Cantonese. Many have no idea that the amount of racism Chinese can encounter in Britain. And I'd have more respect for those HKers who are demonstrating if they'd ask for independence rather than revert back to British rule. I remember some locals were angry that HK was given as a consolation prize to Chris Patten when he lost in the UK local elections. People do have short memories.

I don't hate Mainland Chinese. For example, I've never mentioned the "bad manners" others bring up. Like you I believe that bad manners exist everywhere. I also know firsthand that great intellect exists in China. In my line of "business", I meet brilliant people from everywhere. I don't just think racists are misinformed or biased, to me it's a clear sign of stupidity and/or being weak-minded. You don't expect a cranky old man like me to like those who can't think for themselves, do you?

My beef is against the government. It's that simple. I would have been against the Japanese government before and during the war also.

I agree that HK people have been brainwashed by the British. Most of them even prefer an English name even though they do not look even a little bit like English.They even prefer to follow English culture than the Chinese long herritage culture! In a documentary which I watched on our TV channel on an interview with a very famous Hong Kong person who also pointed out that Hong Kong People have been brainwashed by the British to go against China because the British are afraid of them siding with China. What a shame. Japan should not be politically brainwashed by the Americans also and should be united with their Asian neighbours for peace and prosperity. Just seen an interview with former PM of Japan. Pity he resigned in 2010. He worked so hard for good relationship with Asian neighbours and have done so much good for Japan.

The ruling of Britain and China are fundamentally different. For the Britain ruling, British government will only send the top official to Hong Kong. So if you want to let the policy done, you need to coorperated with the local peoples. You also need to consider the local people to consider the policy.. For the China ruling, Chinese government sent the whole hierarchy to Hong Kong, Top official , middle management, front line management, even the lowest class... that mean, they dont need to coorperate with the local peoples and can do all the job on their own...

In a 2010 poll, 52% of the Taiwanese said Japan was their #1 favorite country with only 5% of Taiwanese picking China. Taiwan was also the #2 donor (right behind the US) to Japan's earthquake recovery several years ago.

China has been very fair and tolerant to Hong Kong although it is Chinese land given back by the British after they have forcedly occupied it. Hong Kong is doing so well now also because of China and those weak minded Hongkies should glad. They should learn to be proud of their Chinese heritage and custom even after being brainwashed and so influenced by the British during their rule although they have been treated as 2nd class citizens then. Most of them even prefer English names, think and behave like English. They are definitely not proud of their race and prefer to be Westerners. Why didn't HK people protest in the past when the British did not allow them to choose their leaders? In fact the leader has to be an English man! The Hong Kong Chinese were like puppets. This has happened to other countries like Malaysia and many other countries including India before which has make UK very rich then.
