Ok JAL, thanks for not INFORMING the media as to WHY a JAL plane had to make an emergency landing in Hawaii! Idiots!!
darnname
Yes, no accident happened; no one was injured; and nothing of any consequence happened. Let's demand immediate answers to something that doesn't affect us at all.
Here, I'll add some exclamation marks for western dramatic effect: !!
OMG!!

Indeed, I'd rather bury my head in the sand and not care about anything in the world other than myself.

Cockpit indicators showed low oil pressure in one engine. We don't know if it was an instrument error or low pressure.
Do you feel better now?
Monaka
That's quite the turn!

Boeing needs to do something about this. It's destroying their reputation.

Lots of armchair quarterbacks on this newsthread. Any of you been on a flight that had a serious malfunction? As a child while flying New York to London with my mother, one of our four engines started smoking and I saw it catch on fire then it was shut down. The plane landed in Reykjavik where we spent a day waiting for another flight. I can still recall wondering/worrying if we were going ditch in the north atlantic and make it out alive.
John Becker
It's only "destroying their reputation" among people who don't understand what "maintenance issue" means, or who don't understand that Boeing doesn't make the engines.

My mom was on that same plane back to the U.S. last month. She probably wouldn't have minded being stranded in Hawaii instead of dealing with rude airport staff in Frisco.

Which is basically everyone.

Boeing has many, many questions to ANSWER to all of us!!

Why?

I'm starting to doubt this bird's reliability and safety. I hope all the involved stakeholders would do a thorough check before they let this bird fly again. Safety should be paramount.

Interestingly, with the right turn diversion, the plane flew 4,897 miles to Honolulu, instead of its planed flight of 4,917 miles to San Francisco, just 20 miles less!

So... the oil pressure monitoring system reports a potential problem in one of the engines and the flight crew terminates the flight rather than gambling that it's a false indication. It seems to me the safety systems in the plane were working fine and the actions of the crew were made with 100% regard for their passengers' safety. Here's a thought... "How many planes OTHER than the 787's have to divert due to warnings EVERY YEAR?" This is getting news coverage because it's a 787 and Agence France-Press (the author of this article) is a French news service with a vested interest in supporting Airbus SAS (based in Blagnac, France).
Jeff Huffman
ANA is retiring it's fleet of 747s the month. I wonder if they are having second thoughts?
The 787 is an engineering marvel. But it's apparent that there were lots of design shortcuts taken or "unknowns" left unanswered.

@John Becker
"Boeing doesn't make the engines."
For the 10 millionth times, Boeing is responsible for making sure that everything works correctly. They suck even more if their best execute/explanation is "our supplier makes engines, it's not our problem"

I love it how this makes news headlines. Guys have you got any idea of how many planes had emergency landings today? Gosh the media is a big gossip queen that feeds of lies.It is an amazing plane, it is good these things are happening, the people are able to solve the problems. It is not like it has crashed!
FooPeiLing
Oh look. Another Boeing Airplane. Just great.

Actually there maybe a product liability against Yuasa as there is a remedy.
