JR East to re-educate employees after frequent overruns on JR Keiyo Line

JR East says it will re-educate its employees after its trains have been involved in a series of overruns at platforms.

The latest incident occurred at JR Keiyo line's Inage-kaigan station in Chiba Prefecture on Tuesday, Fuji TV reported. A local train bound for Soga station stopped 100 meters beyond the designated platform just before 9:30 p.m., and caused a five-minute delay.

According to JR East, the male driver said that he got drowsy and could not apply the brakes in time.

There have been six cases of delay due to overruns caused on the Keiyo line since February.

Please explain the nature of the re-education.

The first 10 minutes of MIchael Keaton's 'Gung Ho' video is a great example of Japanese corporate re-education!

Doesn't seem like much really, as busy as they are

The re-education is along the lines of Junior High School English lessons:

"That is a brick wall. Do you see the brick wall?"

"Yes. I see the brick wall."

"Is this the brake lever?"

"No! That is NOT the brake lever. That is the accelerator."

Sickening crash!

If the driver they mentioned felt drowsy it's more likely over-work than something "education" will fix. Scheduling more frequent breaks or switching of drivers will probably have more effect than a boss yelling at employees to stay awake in the name of "re-education"

JR East to re-educate employees after the appropriate self-criticism

Wonder whether they all got drowsy when they were supposed to stop? Chronic station drowsiness? Make the stations look more exiting . Bikini ladies waving the stop sign or something the like. Beats any re-education measure.

Miodinow,

More likely one too many chuhai's the night before.

In the movie sex lies and videotape Peter Gallagher's character said to his wife "you can put in the salt but you can't take it out." These drivers should learn to stop too soon rather than too late

Actual self assesment, including drowsiness recognition and combat is one of the basic lessons any professional pilot, driver, etc. takes in school.. It seems it was not enough to begin with, and they'd need a refresh.

Reeducation is a twist on words. Employees are subjected to humiliation and dehumanizing punishment. The only result is instilling more fear of making mistakes. Japan Today has other articles which explain in detail.

"Seconds from Disaster" explains the events that led to the Amagasaki crash. Reeducation had the counterproductive result of causing a fatal accident instead of preventing future mistakes.
