Police recapture escaped peacock

Police in Yachiyo, Chiba Prefecture, on Monday recaptured a 90-cm-long peacock that had escaped from the station.

According to the police, a man reported just before 7 a.m. that there was a peacock in his field. The peacock had entered a greenhouse, and officers recaptured it with a rope, without hurting it.

The peacock belonged to the president of a company in Kamisu City, Ibaraki Prefecture, 40 kilometers away. The man, who owned three peacocks, reported that on April 30, two of them escaped. He found one but the third was picked up by police in a residential area of Yachiyo City on the morning of May 6.

Police held a press conference that day, hoping the owner would come forward. During the press conference, the peacock, which was kept in a dog cage, freed itself by unhooking the door of the cage and fled, leaving the police red-faced.

Cue Benny Hill theme tune!

Good grief! If a freakin' peacock can escape the cops, how on earth can they expect to catch criminals?

No doubt this 'crime' will be added to the list of solved cases by the keystones. Back to the TV and bentos, boys.

Japanese catching something?! Shock and disbelief. I bet the peacock really walked into a local Jovan to surrender itself.

The peacock has now confessed to several additional, and heinous, crimes.

I don't know which is worse, having a press conference about a caught peacock, or the peacock escaping.
